From the Dartmouth Athletic's web page:
- A mecca for the highly motivated student-athlete, Dartmouth College is the nation's ninth oldest university and a member of the Ivy League. Featuring a comprehensive athletic menu, Dartmouth offers 35 varsity sports - 16 for men, 18 for women and coed sailing. In addition, there are 35 club and 24 intramural sports as three-quarters of Dartmouth undergraduates participate in some form of athletics.
- Nicknamed "The Big Green," Dartmouth's varsity athletic teams compete in NCAA Division 1 as well as in the eight-member Ivy League conference and the ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference). Throughout the years, Dartmouth athletes have competed at the very highest level, excelling in NCAA championships ranging from track and field to basketball, cross country to soccer, as well as skiing, golf, lacrosse and diving
Kim's job is to help organize the mentor program for football. She recruits at least 35 mentors each year. She surveys the football players and the mentors and works to match the player with a mentor who may have some similar interests.
She let us know that this program was started by David Hagerman.
Kim and Tom shared stories about students they have connected with through this program, including a graduate who is now a NIKE vice president.
Bob Gasser has joined the mentoring program and shared his experience year-to-date.
Additional information from Dartmouth's web pages:
- The Dartmouth football program has launched its "Dartmouth Football Connect" website, a professional platform that is exclusively for individuals with a connection to the college, whether it be as an alum, a student-athlete, a parent or friend of the program. The goal of the platform is to give Big Green football student-athletes and mentors an opportunity to engage with each other using career connections as the center of their relationship.
- Dartmouth Football Connect helps Big Green football student-athletes from all walks of life access new opportunities with information on job and internship opportunities, plus achieve their career goals by making mentors and advisers accessible. Current football student-athletes and mentors can all create accounts.
- The goal for mentors is to be a guide and resource who will share their Dartmouth education and professional experience to pave the way for current football athletes to succeed at Dartmouth and beyond. By joining the network, mentors will be able to connect with current and former Big Green football athletes and offer professional advice, set goals, support personal and professional development, model professional behavior, and challenge them to go beyond their comfort zone in order to achieve personal growth.
- The platform will also provide a forum for posting questions and answers to various professional topics, informational interviews via video or meetings, and discussion boards to share knowledge more broadly.
- Please visit the website, dfbconnect.dartmouth.edu, for more information on how to get involved with Dartmouth Football Connect.

Happy Dollars
Bill Secord shared that Linda left her wallet at Manoir Hovey. The hotel staff let them know that it was en-route via FedEx...sad news...it is yet to arrive. Creating the headache of notifying credit card companies, and dealing with NH for her driver's license, etc, etc.

Rotary Foundation Presentation
Ron Bedell presented Bob Gasser with his Paul Harris +1Pin.
Bob Gasser & Ron Bedell
The presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognition is The Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for Rotary’s founder, a Chicago lawyer, who started our organization with three business associates in 1905.
Donations to The Rotary Foundation permits us to carry out an array of programs that achieve beneficial changes in our world: Improved living conditions, increased food production, better education, wider availability of treatment and rehabilitation for the sick and disabled, new channels for the flow of international understanding, and brighter hopes for peace.

Stories of service from around the world
Rotarians respond in the Bahamas
ShelterBox Head of Operations Alf Evans, left, confers with local contacts including Past RI President Barry Rassin, right, in the Bahamas.
Report compiled by Diana White, past district governor, and District 7020 Rotarians
The destruction left behind by Hurricane Dorian is devastating. In parts of the Bahamas, literally everything is gone, replaced by piles of rubble where homes once stood. Roads blocked with debris and thousands on thousands left homeless and in need of supplies.
As Rotarians in District 7020, one of two districts that cover the Caribbean and hard-hit Bahamas, we immediately switched into assistance mode. Significant donations of supplies are funneling in from various local efforts and through international disaster relief agencies.
As this aid continues to come in, Rotary in the Bahamas is beginning to move to longer-term strategies in preparation for helping the economies to recover. We will get in to do a needs assessment as soon as access is possible and work in coordination with the government. We also plan to raise impactful funding to bring these communities back.
It will take time; but that is what Rotary is best at.
In the meantime, here are a few of the local efforts underway that Rotarians in our district have had a hand in:
- Rotarians in Nassau have rescued, registered and sheltered more than 3,300 evacuees in New Providence and Eleuthera. Through the receiving and registration process at the airport’s main staging site, we collect information on those needing housing. We are constantly working to assess needs and fill the gap by providing resources, even working to provide non-governmental controlled shelter in private homes and vacant rental spaces. So far, we have been able to place 153 persons in hotels and private homes. We have many Rotarians and Rotaractors who are working at kiddie play area, helping to facilitate expedited processing for those with babies or in wheelchairs.
- Nassau Rotarians were also able to purchase eight bunk beds for The Ranfurly Home for Children to assist in preparing a room that will now be home to 17 children evacuated from the Grand Bahama Children’s Home.
- In Grand Bahama, the water plant in Freeport undertaken as a global grant 10 years ago was the first water available in Freeport after Dorian.
- Following an emergency meeting held on 3 September, Rotary members in the British Virgin Islands, under the leadership of their district governor, will be launching a major fundraising effort to help victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. This will include a live telethon to be held on Tuesday, 10 September.
- Disaster Aid Canada, Disaster Aid USA and Disaster Aid UK&I are working together with local Rotarians to provide shelter and comfort. Tents that were pre-positioned in Nassau have been set up for evacuees with the assistance of Rotary clubs in the Bahamas. An additional 50 to 100 tents, tarps, water systems, bed packs, and hygiene items have been sent. Rotarians have erected 16 tents at the main receiving site for evacuees. In the near future, international volunteers will use these as their living quarters as they give their time to support national relief efforts.
The Bahamian people are amazingly resilient and will get through this no matter how long it takes. Rotarians here and around the world have surrounded us with love and empathy and an outpouring of well wishes and offers of support. Once again I am inspired by Rotarians and their willingness to step up and make other people’s lives better. I am proud to be a Rotarian.
Editor’s Note: Rotary’s disaster relief partner ShelterBox has sent a team to the Bahamas to work with Rotary members, local contacts, and other organizations to assess damage, evaluate recovery options, and determine needs for emergency shelter. Watch a video update from the team. Get more updates on local Rotary efforts on Rotary’s Facebook page.
