Starting in the late 1880s, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were embroiled in a battle now known as the War of the Currents. Edison developed direct current -- current that runs continually in a single direction, like in a battery or a fuel cell. During the early years of electricity, direct current (shorthanded as DC) was the standard in the U.S. But there was one problem. Direct current is not easily converted to higher or lower voltages. Tesla believed that alternating current (or AC) was the solution to this problem. Alternating current reverses direction a certain number of times per second -- 60 in the U.S. -- and can be converted to different voltages relatively easily using a transformer. This week, Colin Read, Ph.D., professor of economics and finance at SUNY Plattsburgh, and a former Rotary Club president, talks about the Current Wars and how DC has infiltrated our electrical appliances, computers, TVs and other equipment in our homes and businesses today. ************************************************** Pre-Ordering Lunch for Wednesday Meetings -- Quick Link to OrderThe Rotary Club of Plattsburgh continues to hold its weekly meetings via Zoom due to COVID-19 in Clinton County. Emergencies can happen when you least expect it — whether you're at home, at work, or in another public setting. When an emergency does happen, every minute matters. It’s important that you are aware of your surroundings -- also known as Situational Awareness -- every time you leave your home so that you can act quickly and potentially help save a life. These terrifying situations aren’t going to wait around long enough so that you can collect yourself, but there are several mental steps that you can take ahead of time so that you’re better prepared if such a disaster were to ever happen. Bernie Bulriss, retired NYS Trooper, discusses the the reasons and benefits to know about situational awareness. ************************************************** Pre-Ordering Lunch for Wednesday Meetings -- Quick Link to OrderThe Rotary Club of Plattsburgh continues to hold its weekly meetings via Zoom due to COVID-19 in Clinton County.
