ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, is a new way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget. For far too many families, the cost of living outpaces what they earn. ALICE families are those that have earnings above the Federal Poverty Level, but below a basic cost-of-living threshold. In other words, they are struggling to make ends meet. Despite working hard and holding important jobs in our state, nearly half of Northern New York families are ALICE; combined with those in poverty, 29% of North Country households is experiencing financial hardship. John Bernardi, president and CEO of the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc., and a past president of the Rotary club, will discuss the tough choices that ALICE households have to make every single day and the commitment and partnerships the United Way has made to help ALICE families. ************************************************** Please Note: The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh continues to hold its weekly meetings via Zoom due to COVID-19 in Clinton County.
