Many North Country residents have received flyers toting the value of community solar farms. And, most Americans aren’t able to put solar panels on their residences or businesses for a variety of reasons. Community solar fixes this problem through the installation of a locally situated and shared solar farm that is connected to the electricity grid. Residential and commercial customers can subscribe to a solar farm, meaning they agree to purchase electricity credits generated by the array. For more than three generations, the Hamilton family has been serving communities in the North Country. This tradition of service has taken various forms over the years and continues today with the future development of a local, community-based solar farm. While the HamilSun Community Solar Farm, which will be located in Peru, is still in development, the solar farm will utilize lands not suitable for agriculture and will bring the benefits of renewable energy while providing a financial benefit to local families and businesses in our community. Mark Hamilton along with Jim Kurtz and Mike Roach (RER Energy/Sunvestments) will discuss with the club this Wednesday the value of community solar farms. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County. Nov. 24, 2021 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Rotary International has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. PDG Dr. Deepak Purohit is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and has done Polio surgeries for over 20 years through Rotary in and around RID 3131 and in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar. Dr. Purohit joined the Rotary Club of Panvel in 1989 and was District Governor in RID 3131 (2009-10). PDG Purohit will discuss the latest info concerning Polio. ************************************************** Please Note: The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has decided that the weekly meeting will return to virtual broadcast via Zoom for the next several weeks due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Clinton County. An agreement between the U.S. and Canada from 2002 says any migrant who enters Canada through a location that is not a port of entry is allowed to stay and request asylum. Roxham Road, near Champlain, NY, is the most-used unofficial entry point on the northern border. Nearly 60,000 people have crossed through since February 2017. It was closed down during the pandemic but reopened in November 2021. Since then, thousands of asylum-seekers have crossed through. Janet McFetridge will return to update the club on the continuing humanitarian crisis at the Roxham Road crossing. ************************************************** Please Note: The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh continues to hold its weekly meetings via Zoom due to COVID-19 in Clinton County. On Feb. 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia recognized the independence of the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR). Three days later, Putin launched a military attack on Ukraine, reportedly to protect residents of the Donbas region from the Ukrainian government. The invasion has resulted in Russian forces attacking major cities and infrastructure in Ukraine. The Russion-Ukrainian relationship has been rocky for nearly a decade. ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, is a new way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget. For far too many families, the cost of living outpaces what they earn. ALICE families are those that have earnings above the Federal Poverty Level, but below a basic cost-of-living threshold. In other words, they are struggling to make ends meet. Despite working hard and holding important jobs in our state, nearly half of Northern New York families are ALICE; combined with those in poverty, 29% of North Country households is experiencing financial hardship. John Bernardi, president and CEO of the United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc., and a past president of the Rotary club, will discuss the tough choices that ALICE households have to make every single day and the commitment and partnerships the United Way has made to help ALICE families. ************************************************** Please Note: The Rotary Club of Plattsburgh continues to hold its weekly meetings via Zoom due to COVID-19 in Clinton County.
