As a teacher and Executive Coach, education is one of my key passions (along with my family, singing, fishing and of course, Rotary).  September is Basic Education and Literacy Month when Rotarians focus on the goal of strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Whilst we as Rotarians associate this month to promote teacher training, student mentoring and adult literacy, education also crosses into a plethora of other fields. Education is the power that can break many of the world’s issues surrounding poverty, slavery and disease. Opportunities for education can be sourced through a number of avenues, and we should always be of a mindset of continual growth and learning. This is ever more prevelant in our Rotary and wider network. Our District Avenues of Service Chairs are constantly offering learning opportunities. Some of the more recent ones have been: - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seminars
- Writing Seminars
- How to host hybrid meeting webinar
- ClubRunner basics
- Mentoring and Facilitating workshops.
We also have access to the Rotary Leadership Institute where our very own PDG Julie Mason facilitates. The next one is in November. Our President Elects have access to President Elect Capability Seminars (PECS aka PETS) On My Rotary, you have access to a plethora of free learning courses in the Learning Centre. Our very own Rotary District 9800 website has a link to a newly formed Learning Management System that services many of the Districts within Victoria and Tasmania. Every year, our incoming Board is provided with some training opportunities through the District Assembly. And most importantly, we have each other. We learn most from the love, mentorship, leadership, and fellowship of our fellow Rotarians. With the common bond we share, but with the diversity of our unique vocations and experience, each of us are the best learning opportunities that we can provide each other.... and there are 1.2million learning opportunities around the world that we have access to.

I just thought I’d give you a quick heads up around a piece of work Satya (from the JET Australia Foundation) and I have done in the past 24hrs. Since his presentation at our Club a few weeks ago, I’ve been working closely with Satya to connect him with more Rotarians from around our District. In fact, I was planning to introduce him to the Presidents of the Westside Cluster when I meet with them this coming Monday. However, with the explosion of COVID cases within Shepparton, resulting in a large proportion of their population having to lockdown and isolate, many families are struggling to get access to basic necessities. Satya and I reached out to my contacts in Tatura and we’ve arranged to send 2000 staple packs to the Shepparton area, including the surrounding areas of Mooroopna and Tatura which have a number of residents in huge remote farm lands that are cut-off from going into town due to stay-at-home orders. Just as an aside, I thought that they were able to leave home to buy food (and other essential items), however, when they get into town, all the shops are closed because the people running the stores have been forced to stay home and isolate as well. By way of cc, Rakesh, thank you for introducing us to Satya and the JET Australia Foundation. My contacts in Tatura will certainly get Satya connected with other Service groups (inc Rotary) in that area so that they can continue providing support to those impacted by this lockdown. Hello Everyone, I thought I would give a up date on our fish and chip baby outfits. Sue Campbell has 93 jumpers and beanies ready I will make up the rest to get to 100, Sue can send them off overseas. Beanies and slippers for the Mission, we need some help here. Ids there anyone who can knit and assist with this project. Call Sue C. or Jill for patterns. Our first Craft Ladies Zoom meeting was last Friday, we all had a laugh and catch up. If anyone wants to join us on a Friday t make cards, or just chat, please get in touch with Sue C. to be included in the Zoom meeting. I will be making up envelopes for this week’s zoom, the crafty ladies will be making Christmas cards. Each envelope will contain all the necessary item to make up each card. It's only the second week of our new Rotary year, and we've already been extremely busy supporting the needs of our Community. This week alone, we've been able to: - Source Oral Packs from Colgate, and provide the to Deb from Uniting Care.
- GIVIT donated $550 in KMart gift vouchers so that we could purchase socks and pyjamas
- We received a number of Doonas that we donated
- Acquired a number of slippers which we donated to the Psychiatric Ward and Mercy Hospital
- Society of St Vincent de Paul's provide 60 boxes of jackets (approx 500). We've already donated 200 jackets to Stella Maris to support the merchant sailors from the Philippines and New Guinea
- Prepared over 100 toiletry packs
- Received a Certificate of Appreciation from Uniting Care.

As always John Campbell and Eddie helped set up for the day. Melinda, Charlotte, Sue and John Selleck worked the first shift. This was Melinda and Charlotte’s first time working at a Bunnings BBQ. Charlotte and Sue worked at the front counter and explained to people “Sausages are free until 1pm but.... you are welcome to donate”. We lost count of how many $5 and $10 notes went into the Werribee Mercy Hospital fundraising tin.

Fun Run St Patrick's Day had an extra special vibe at the Wyndham Rotary Funrun at Chirnside Park in gorgeous sunshine. Feedback received has indicated that a testament to the event was the organisation, friendliness shown to people as they came to register, information provided about the course, support for participants along the way and final acknowledgement at the end.

 Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school. After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

 For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen. After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

 What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.
A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.

 Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free." The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.
