Program
Philomena Mantella - President of Grand Valley State University

Started at Ferris State University, then moved on to positions at Northeastern University in Boston. Started at GVSU in July of 2019.

University adjusted to remote learning one week prior to originally planned due to the pandemic. Experiential learning is particularly difficult (theater and sciences), and the University has done everything possible to maintain face-to-face for younger students. Had one of the lowest virus incidence of any Michigan universities. Safety first while preserving education and experience as much as possible.

Five areas of emphasis:
1. Equity. Adult education, giving adults a chance to re-enter the University setting and veteran's promise.
2. Quality Educational setting
3. Lifetime Learning
4. Regional catalyst for growth
5. Transform education - need to be part of this conversation as a convener and leader

GVSU will be a catalyst for good!

Announcements - Get Involved!
Announcements:

Paul McNergney announced a special fundraising effort to purchase Christmas gifts for Honduran children. Here are the details:
During the past eight months many Honduran families faced starvation and some were fed by El Ayudante/Comayagua Rotary Club. I believe most of the kids in these village survived but from reports some in more remote villages may not have. Kids we know through our Rotary Host Partners (water filters and latrines) had a traumatic experience and need a Special Christmas.

El Ayudante has identified some Honduran toys/clothes available for Christmas gift bags. Each bag is $10, and $20 donation would provide a bag for both boy and girl in a family.  Our target is 200 Special Christmas gift bags to celebrate in most villages fed during worst of COVID shutdown.

Girls’ bags:
-  a set of homemade hair scrunches
(by a sewing group in the mountain)
-  a bath towel
-  a small toy

Boys’ bag
- a water bottle
- a small toy (hopefully homemade)
- a bath towel
The address is: https://elayudanteinhonduras.com/donate/  for PayPal. Fill in designation, “Christmas project”, OR mail a check to:

El Ayudante Missions USA, Inc.
PO Box 154
Rodeo, CA 94572

Christmas love with a gift from us will truly represent a Special Christmas for these kids.
