Ottawa County Dept of Public Health - Dawn Dotson, Community Health Team Supervisor, presented information on Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP) for women and children in the County. Most work takes place out of a County building on James Street in Holland, but there are satellite offices in Grand Haven and Hudsonville.

Every county in the state has a Maternal and Infant Health Program. Ottawa County's program is the largest county-wide program in Michigan.

MIHP is a fee for service home visiting program for Medicaid eligible women. Nurses visit homes to offer information to mother-to-be and follow up care for infants. Staff work with residents on prenatal care, food/nutrition, domestic violence, diseases, transportation, hypertension, housing, infant safety, development, breast feeding,  and other topics. Mental health services are also provided as part of MIHP services.

Mothers-to-be receive up to 9 home visits. Infants receive up to 18 home visits, more if substance abuse or other issues are discovered. Participation in MIHP has proven to an effective way of reducing or eliminating health problems for the most vulnerable members of our society.
