Funding Future Projects A number of presentations were presented to the group for fundraising projects in 2018/2019 and beyond. These included: Lake Michigan Beaches -- Install large signs at City Beach and state park to improve public safety response time to emergencies. Lira, Uganda -- Work with Spring Lake on providing funding for water wells in Lira, Uganda. Jumping for Polio -- Continue participation in the international movement to eradicate polio. No club expenses involved in this participation. El Ayudante -- Continue working with this club in Honduras on clean water filters. El Cana Lott -- Water and sanitation project in northwestern Honduras. Downtown Sound -- install speakers in the downtown area to play ambient music, make announcements, etc. to enhance the downtown shopping experience. Book Bus -- Joint public between GHAPS and Library to bring books, science projects, etc. to kids, seniors and others during the summer and throughout the year. Community Mental Health -- Executive Director, Lynn Doyle Ottawa County Community Mental Health is part of Ottawa County government. Funding comes primarily from the State medicaid/general fund dollars and local county-wide millage. The county millage vote was the first positive vote in Michigan in support of mental health services. Opiate abuse and drug overdoses have skyrocketed locally and nationally. In 2017 there were 29 OD deaths , up for 6 or 7 ten years ago. This number is predicted in increase. In Grand Haven, funding from the millage is contracted to Extended Grace and Momentum Center to provide services to adults with mental illnesses and services for all types of mental illnesses, drug abuse, and other illnesses. Total operational budget is about $40 million with about $3 million generated by the local, ten-year millage. |
