Former Rotary exchange student Amanda Cooper-Davis from New Zealand visited as a guest of Mart Johnson and spoke briefly on her travels from NZ to GH.

Now thru May 27, the District will match a gift to the Foundation 50/50 up to $500 - $1000 will earn a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Grand Haven Main Street DDA is seeking volunteers to "Adopt A Planter" for the 2015 spring and summer season. Responsibilities include removing weeds, broken stems and trash from the raised flower planters along Washington. A plaque recognizing the business (organization or family) that is caring for the planter is included in each flower bed. Brook announced that Rotary will participate in the 30 year birthday celebration for the Grand Haven Farmers Market on July 11 - more later!
Mark your calendars: a Club party honoring the outgoing President & welcoming the incoming President on July 15 will be held at the Grand Haven Sailing Club (Clubhouse 219 N Harbor) from 6:00-8:30 PM. Brats/Burgers, chips/snacks, ice cream, beer & wine will be provided by the club.
Each member is being asked to sell or purchase 4 tickets for the D'Vine Event, which takes place June 25 at the GH Farmer's Market. Funds raised this year will help support the remodeling and reconstruction of the Water Front Stadium. Tickets are moving fast with the goal of selling 500 this year. Our June 1 meeting was on the road at Old Boys Brewery. We heard from Dave Bayes, brewer.
Dave has been with Old Boys since it's founding in 1997. As a longtime fan of beer, Dave began home brewing and took that love of beer to Old Boys. Dave provided information on the 4 main ingredients of beer - malt, grains, yeast and water - and explained the process used to craft various types of beers.
Dave Bayes, Brewmaster for Old Boys Brewhouse in Spring Lake shared the art of brewing craft beer. Dave attended the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago to become a master brewer. Dave explained that there are four main ingredients in beer: cereal grains, water, hops, and brewer's yeast. Hops are a bittering component of beer used to offset sweetness, but can provide a floral and/or fruity flavor. The bulk of American hops are grown in the Pacific North West; however, many are now being grown in Michigan. Dave also explained that a variety of tests are run on each batch to ensure quality.
19 students participated in the Rotary Mentoring effort in 2014/2015, and the most often repeated sentiment from the students at the May 18 & 19 meetings was "I did not think college was for me, until my Mentor helped me understand that IT IS FOR ME." Thank you to all 19 mentors who helped bring these kids to a meaningful post-high school plan that will set them on a course for success!
