Jennifer McVoy, Out Side In

Out Side In provides Equine Assisted Psycho Therapy to children and adults in our region. She showed a video that displayed beautiful pictures of children interacting with horses, accented by stark statistics about the pressures and threats that face our children in the tri-cities area. Approximately 65% of clients are girls.

With traditional therapy, 20% - 40% of pateints never come back for a second session, and 20% - 40% of those who come back to session #2, 20% - 40% do not return for session #3. With Equine Assisted therapy, a whopping 95% make it through the full three month program.

Jennifer was a social worker for Coopersville Schools, and she started this program with just 6 kids. Now they provide over 2,000 hours of service per year seeing up to 50 people per week (total clients so far = 600). The farm is on 25 acres south of Lincoln on 152nd. The organization gets horses that are retired race horses. Over 10,000 retired racehorses are destroyed each year; Out Side In has rescued 20 thoroughbreds.

Out Side In also works with veterans who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). Veterans are often resistant to seeking therapy, but there is something about horses that elevates trust levels and brings the veterans to the program.

The program is expanding right now - they are building an indoor arena with 20 horse stalls.

Members were scheduled to receive a presentation by Jennifer McVoy of Out Side In; however, a mix-up in communication may have occurred because our presenter did not attend. Instead, members shared various updates and the meeting ended early.

The official Grand Haven Area Visitors Guide 2016 is hot off the press! Joy Gaasch made copies available to club members - or stop by the Chamber or the CVB for a copy. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Gernot announced Pre Pets is this Saturday at Baker College with the Grant Management seminar from 2 - 4 p.m.

WINTER RUN FOR THE PLAYGROUND is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 12 in downtown Grand Haven.

Rotary Club of Spring Lake: The Spring Lake Club announced a Euchre Tournament at the Elks Club on Friday, February 12. This is taking the place of the annual Raffle and is part of the annual Spring Lake SNOW JAM.

Mentors Needed: Changes this year - open businesses to students to learn about your career. Please see Mike Helsen if you are interested in volunteering.

District Raffle: Tom Manderscheid is the Club and District Chair of this year's raffle. Sales go from January 1 - February 29. If we sell our allotment, our club can receive $5,000 toward a club project, and $10 of each ticket sold goes toward our club's annual EREY obligation. Members can be billed for the tickets and checks may be made out to Rotary District 6290. THIRTEEN tickets remain to be sold. Get Tom off the podium; sell some tickets!

50/50 Raffle Tickets - There are fifty tickets left this week, with a 50/50 pot of $78. No winner, so IT GROwS!

Upcoming Rotary themes include: January – Vocational Service; February – Peace & Conflict Prevention and Resolution; March – Water and Sanitation; April – Maternal and Child Health; May – Youth Service; and June Fellowship. Any programs around these themes would be very helpful.
