Bari Johnson announced that India and Nigeria are polio free for the past year, and Pakistan is the last place where it still exists. If all goes as planned, by 2018, we will have eradicated polio.

Each member is being asked to sell or purchase 4 tickets for the D'Vine Event, which takes place June 25 at the GH Farmer's Market. Funds raised this year will help support the remodeling and reconstruction of the Water Front Stadium. Tickets are moving fast with the goal of selling 500 this year. Stacey Trowbridge, Program Director for Disability Network Lakeshore (DNL) provided an overview of the organization's mission and services. DNL was founded in 1992, is located in Holland, and serves the counties of Allegan and Ottawa. DNL provides information and referral, advocacy, peer support, and independent living skills to individuals of all ages and disability types. DNL also works on a community level to increase awareness of disability and promote inclusion by offering physical and programmatic accessibility assessments and partnering on a variety of initiatives with local businesses and governmental entities.
Matt Lator presented on Occupational Fraud and Abuse. He shared the following insights based on a conference he recently attended, and an annual survey conducted by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiner’s (www.acfe.com)
Fraud occurs in every community, including Ottawa County. The Sleep Inn of Allendale, St. Patrick’s church in Grand Haven, Magnum Outdoor Life in Nunica, and Ferry School PTA embezzlements are just a few examples. The typical organization impacted by this crime loses 5%/yr. The median loss for all organizations affected is $145,000, and over half of these organizations experience a loss of less than $200,000. There are three types of fraud: cash on hand, corruption such as bribery and extortion, and financial statement tampering. Misappropriation schemes are the most common; 10% involve check tampering, 20% include non-cash transactions, and 23% are billing related.
Fraud is often uncovered via verbal tips (40%) and private companies are the largest victims, but only 60% are reported to authorities because the company fears a negative public opinion. The most common perpetrator is between the ages of 30 and 50; they often exhibit behavioral “red flags” such as living beyond their means and/or are experiencing financial difficulties. Prevention strategies include:
Owners and managers who openly verbalize to their employees a commitment to integrity and encourage high ethical standards of conduct
Implementing internal controls, i.e. segregation of duties, limiting data access, and the opportunity for employees provide anonymous tips of suspected fraud
Making all employees aware that bank statements, payroll, vendor reports, and profit and loss statements are regularly reviewed by a second or third party
