Low profile outreach charity based in Grand Haven.

 

Humanity for Prisoners started out supporting those who were wrongly imprisoned, but eventually transformed into a charity that offers help to all prisoners.  90% of current inmates in Michigan will eventually be released.  If we are truly dedicated to rehabilitation, our inmates need consistent advocacy, oversight and assistance.

 

Founded in 2001 and based on Christian principals, but not an evangelical ministry.  They respond to more than 1,500 requests per year.  Humanity for Prisoners provides yarn for knitting and crochet groups, testify for inmates in Public Hearings, advocate adequate medical care, and work to improve conditions for dying inmates and their families.

 

A 501 C (3) charity, HFP advocates for all prisoners, but especially those with physical or mental disabilities and those with no family or friends on the outside.

The morning group also enjoyed a presentation by Doug Tjapkes, Founder of Humanity for Prisoners.

Rotary Club of Spring Lake: David Stocking from the Spring Lake Club announced a Euchre Tournament at the Elks Club on Friday, February 12.  This is taking the place of the annual Raffle and is part of the annual Spring Lake SNOW JAM.

 

Mentors Needed: Changes this year - open businesses to students to learn about your career. Please see Mike Helsen if you are interested in volunteering.

 

District Raffle: Tom Manderscheid is the Club and District Chair of this year's raffle.  Sales go from January 1 - February 29.  If we sell our allotment, our club can receive $5,000 toward a club project, and $10 of each ticket sold goes toward our club's annual EREY obligation. Members can be billed for the tickets and checks may be made out to Rotary District 6290.

 

Raffle Tickets - $467 total - $99 to the winner, $368 to a Charity of choice.  32 cards left.

Program Ideas - If anyone has program ideas for the rest of the Rotary year, they should contact Dale Swihart  swihartsbd@aol.com or 616-414-7216.  Upcoming Rotary themes include: January – Vocational Service; February – Peace & Conflict Prevention and Resolution; March – Water and Sanitation; April – Maternal and Child Health; May – Youth Service; and June Fellowship. Any programs around these themes would be very helpful.
