Justin Roebuck, Ottawa County Clerk and Register of Deeds. Justin mentioned that this was his first visit to the Rotary Club of Grand Haven. March Presidential Primary, 29% turnout, higher than usual. 207,000 registered voters 40% by mail - double usual rate. May Special Election (school district), 27% turnout during a state of emergency. 90,000 voters in the three school districts with elections. 98% by mail, due to emergency orders August Primary RECORD TURNOUT! 34% 68% by mail November expectation is 70% voter turnout with 2/3rds voting by mail. Ballots are starting to go out this week Recruiting an additional 20% of workers for November (from 1,000 to 1,200 workers!) Prior to 2020, all training was done face-to-face. This year the training is happening 90% on line. This is going very well and we have very skilled personnel administering training and technology. Security is also a primary concern - Election systems are never connected to the internet
- Every vote is cast on a paper ballot (very important as a back up)
- Every jurisdictions results are checked by humans - County Board of Canvassers
- Results are hand audited to ensure accuracy
- Paper ballots are stored for 22 months after election and are available to the public
We can all help by planning and participating in the coming election, sign up for updates on the website and social media and share information and/or serve as an election worker. Mail ballots at least ten days before election day. Currently, we will be required to continue to count ballots for 14 days - must be postmarked by November 2 (day before the election). This decision is under legal challenge, so stay tuned! |
