John Martin

Loutit District Library Director

John started at Grand Valley with a degree in history and then went to UM for a Masters in Library Science. He is here today to give an update on the Library.

Loutit Library, after decades of discussion, eliminated late fees in 2019.
September was library card sign up month - Wonder Woman was the feature on the card, and sign ups went up.
700+ library cards went out to high school students.
Got a grant last year to provide mobile hot spot devices ($80,000). Added twenty devices and all were checked out. Got another grant to add ten more, and all of those are now out. Trying to add another ten.
Library closed from March thru June, but the show went on. UPS still delivered and John and staff made many house calls.
When they closed, 15,000 items were checked out. When they re-opened, all 15,000 came back at once.
In 2020, instead of "touch a truck," the library sponsored a "slow roll around Central Park."
The Loutit You Tube Channel features local programming, including the Loutit Littles, Story Time and brief videos on library services.
Story Walks were introduced in 2020 - families take little walks and read stories as they go.

It is a different time, and the local library is coming up with different ways to serve the needs of the public.

Winterfest

Kevin announced that Winterfest is cancelled. This also means that the Rotary winter run is cancelled. We will look for unique ways to make up for the loss of this Rotary event.

Yeyoung Lee - International Peace Scholar

Dept of Agriculture and Resource Economics at MSU. Will come to East Lansing late December.

It is now 2:22 a.m. in South Korea. Her MSU classes are at 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Korean time!

Honduras

Paul McNergney announced a special fundraising effort to purchase Christmas gifts for Honduran children. Here are the details:

During the past eight months many Honduran families faced starvation and some were fed by El Ayudante/Comayagua Rotary Club. I believe most of the kids in these village survived but from reports some in more remote villages may not have. Kids we know through our Rotary Host Partners (water filters and latrines) had a traumatic experience and need a Special Christmas.

El Ayudante has identified some Honduran toys/clothes available for Christmas gift bags. Each bag is $10, and $20 donation would provide a bag for both boy and girl in a family. Our target is 200 Special Christmas gift bags to celebrate in most villages fed during worst of COVID shutdown.

Girls’ bags:

- a set of homemade hair scrunches
(by a sewing group in the mountain)

- a bath towel

- a small toy

Boys’ bag:

- a water bottle

- a small toy (hopefully homemade)

- a bath towel

2020 Young Bucs Fundraiser

Car Raffle – Jeep Wrangler from Preferred Dodge Jeep. $100 tickets, sell 500 tickets = $50,000 and a $20,000 net. Raffle license has been approved by the state and tickets will be available in the near future.
