Program -  Understanding Perinatal Mood Disorders - Laura Bronold, RN, Perinatal Resource Coordinator at NOCH.

Laura presented information on a number of postpartum mood disorders affecting new mothers. Postpartum depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive disorders, and other mood disorders were discussed. Laura presented real-life experiences of new moms. Often new moms are afraid to report their true feelings for fear that they will be judged or that their baby will be taken away. Approximately 15-20% of new moms will develop a mood and/or anxiety disorder within the first year of birth. In 2014 at NOCH, 54% of new moms were diagnosed at high risk for mood disorders.

August 2011, a Postpartum Adjustment Group was formed in cooperation with Pine Rest. In July 2013 the position of Perinatal Resource Coordinator was formed. NOCH has seen an 85% drop in Emergency Dept visits by postpartum moms due to these these innovations.

For further information contact Laura Bronold at 616.847.5512 or HOPEline at 1.844.666.4673. There is a local Facebook support group and there is a regular, weekly support group meeting. Pine Rest also sponsors local postpartum mood disorder support groups.
