Students of the Month: Today we heard from McKenna Twa and Aaron Gal, our students of the month. Topic Today: Grand Haven Department of Public Safety Cheif Hudson has been with the City of Grand Haven for 23 years and now she feels she is in a position that allows her to provide proper perspective on the facilities that need upgrades. The facility was built in the 1970's originally as a bomb shelter. They are looking for 2.0 mills on the upcoming election ballot for 10 years. They are currently running more call volume than any other facility in Ottawa county. They have an issue with the decontamination space and logistics around it. They don't have shower facilities or a second set of gear that adequately protects their staff. In addition, they have expired fire gear, lack of training equipment, and a 20+ year-old ladder truck. The millage would provide for safer working conditions for first responders, longer equipment life spans (lower-cost long term). With the facility and equipment falling behind in maintenance, they are experiencing recruiting challenges compared to local departments. They stated that the millage is an investment, not a luxury. |
