Jaye Beeler, Author of Tasting and Touring Michigan's Homegrown Food--A Culinary Road Trip Jaye shared her passion for buying and eating local and Michigan-produced fruits, vegetables, and other food products. She is a former food editor and restaurant reviewer for the Grand Rapids Press and currently writes for a number of culinary-focused publications. When we buy $100 of locally grown and/or produced food, $73 of that expenditure remains in the state. Jaye stressed that we can all be part of growing our state's and our local agricultural economy by purchasing Michigan Maple syrup, Michigan honey, and Michigan eggs. Michigan is the nation's No. 1 producer of asparagus, and it ranks third only after Washington state and New York in the production of apples. Even though homegrown foods may cost a few pennies more, we are assured of freshness and high quality. Beer and cider are also excellent Michigan-sourced beverages. Reed Warber shared his thoughts on the impact Old Side Ales has on our local community's economy. The ice cream and chips in today's lunch were excellent examples of local food items. A number of Rotarians purchased Jaye's book and will enjoy having it in their homes. A copy of the book is available at the Loutit Library. |
