This Week's speaker
Ryan Kilpatrick, Housing Next
Housing Next is an initiative housed within the Ottawa County United Way funded by the Foundations in Holland and Grand Haven. Charged with finding ways to help with the Housing supply in Ottawa County. Ottawa is the fastest growing county in Michigan for the past ten years, and our housing has not kept pace.

Accomplishments
  • 3,200 new housing units
  • 1st tax credit project in the last 20 years
  • New zoning ordinances to reduce regulatory pressure on price
  • Assisting in update to the Housing Needs Assessment
  • 55 senior oriented units in Spring Lake
  • 30 homes in Grand Haven in Community Land Trust
Northwest Ottawa County
2018 Rentals: 673 new units needed (all income levels)
2021 Rentals: 829 new units needed (all income levels)
- we are creating additional market rate housing, deficit is being driven by need for attainable housing stock.

Owner occupied housing need is more stark: huge demand for market rate housing at prices above $250,000.

1,200 units below $250,000 needed before 2025!

Align land use and transportation interests
Establish consistent design standards
Amenities make density enjoyable

Next up is building support for the math - we cannot deny we need more housing built, and we need to find ways to create housing to fill the need.
