Baker College Veterinary Technician Program - Dr. Laurie Wright

Dr. Wright is the Program Director of the Vet Tech program at Baker College in Muskegon. Dr. Wright was accompanied by her assistant, Paws With A Cause service pup in training, Nike. Paws With A Cause recently placed 16 dogs at the Muskegon Correctioinal Facility for training. Baker College may be working together with teh prison on this program in the future.

This is a 2-year, accredited program that grants an Associates Degree to graduates. Only 24 students are accepted into the program each spring. Students must maintain at least a B- grade. Graduates can expect an average starting wage of approximately $15 or more per hour.

The Vet Tech program and Baker College are partnering with the City of Muskegon, the Muskegon Community Foundation and others on creating a dog park in downtown Muskegon.

Licensed Veterinary Technicians are in great demand. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 30% increase in available positions over the near term.

Baker works with 2 animal emergency hospitals in Grand Rapids.

Gernot Runschke - Provided an update on the International Rotary conference in San Diego. Rotary is looking to increase the number of female members. Worldwide the total is 15% female membership and the goal is 50%. Polio may be eliminated workldwide within the next couple of years. Only Afghanistan and Pakistan experienced polio victims within the past year.

Save the Catwalk Fundraiser - Saturday, Jan. 30 from 2-7 there will be a fundraiser at the GH Eagles to raise funds to help repair and preserve the catwalk on the pier.

WINTER RUN FOR THE PLAYGROUND is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 12 in downtown Grand Haven.

Rotary Club of Spring Lake: The Spring Lake Club announced a Euchre Tournament at the Elks Club on Friday, February 12. This is taking the place of the annual Raffle and is part of the annual Spring Lake SNOW JAM.

Mentors Needed: Changes this year - open businesses to students to learn about your career. Please see Mike Helsen if you are interested in volunteering.

District Raffle: Tom Manderscheid is the Club and District Chair of this year's raffle. Sales go from January 1 - February 29. If we sell our allotment, our club can receive $5,000 toward a club project, and $10 of each ticket sold goes toward our club's annual EREY obligation. Members can be billed for the tickets and checks may be made out to Rotary District 6290. Seventeen tickets remain to be sold.

50/50 Raffle Tickets - Approximately $626 total - $99 to the winner, $527 to a Charity of choice. 23 cards left.

Upcoming Rotary themes include: January – Vocational Service; February – Peace & Conflict Prevention and Resolution; March – Water and Sanitation; April – Maternal and Child Health; May – Youth Service; and June Fellowship. Any programs around these themes would be very helpful.
