Plano East Rotarians Major Remodel at Plano Food Pantry
By Rick Boyer
Plano East Rotary Club (PERC) started their January service project on 1/11/18. The Plano Food Pantry on 18th Street was the beneficiary. PERC remodeled the receiving room where families come to receive their food. It had been badly damaged by the shopping carts that are used to distribute the food. The project started on Friday with some prep work and material delivery; Saturday was demo day, the floor was removed and beadboard and chair rail were installed; Sunday the ceiling and walls were painted; Monday the new floor was installed. There are a couple things to finish this week. (Rick is working on them personally)
Participants in the project included: Kenny Wilson, Rick Maucieri, Ean Sullivan, Patti Henry, Sally Philipp, Gene Losey, David Rodgers, David Roger’s son Jason, Ellitt Braud, Randy Wright and Rick Boyer.
Thank you to all the participants.
Rick Boyer,
Service Chair

Plano East Rotary Sponsors Cuba Trip
Cuba - March 3 - 10, 2018
By Ean Sullivan

Once again the Plano East Rotary club is sponsoring a great service opportunity in Cuba.  All Rotarians, family and friends are welcome to join us on this unique opportunity.  Our last trip in September had 17 members representing 11 different clubs and 3 districts.  Don't miss out.  The nation of Cuba is changing rapidly and you shouldn't miss this.  Shortly after you land in Camaguey the first thing you will notice is obviously the mid 50's Chevys, Oldsmobiles and the like but when you leave the city and get to the town of Cespedes where we will be working you notice that there are more horses and carts than there are cars.  It is like stepping back 75-100 years.  There will be Rotarians on the trip that have been there before and you will have a translator and guides every step of the way.  There is only one way to describe the people of Cuba that we will interact with - INCREDIBLE!  We have wonderful friends in Cuba now that we look forward to seeing again.  Please join us, expand your world, and help show the world the work of Rotary.

I am happy to answer any questions but the better source of information is Alexandria Carruth, the Director of Development of Proclaim Cuba!, our partner organization. She can be reached at 817-805-8555 or info@proclaimcuba.org

NEXT TRIP DETAILS: Cuba - March 3 - 10, 2018 Experience the eastern portion of Cuba,  countryside, cities and beautiful beaches. An incredible opportunity for cultural exchange!  Join Plano East Rotary on a work trip to the island. We will be working on the plumbing and electrical work at a community center. No special skills are required. Trip cost is $1,875 and includes airfare, travel visa, lodging and transportation, and most meals. For information please contact info@proclaimcuba.org, or call 817-805-8555.

I know the timing is short but if there is any way possible you can join us, I personally guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Plano Flags of Honor 2018 Planning Under Way

By Gene Losey

Planning the 'Flags of Honor' project for 2018 is already under way. I have accepted team leadership responsi- bilities and look forward to an exciting and successful experience for everyone.

Last years' program was a stunning success and will be hard to top in many ways. The community, both public and private, were put on notice that Plano East Rotary Club is planting their stake (no pun intended) in the Plano landscape. Statements like:

".. what a moving experience"

“..a job very well done.."

"..are you doing this next year”

"..what can I do to support this project.."

and of course ".. where is 'whats his name flag'.."

were expressed by many Plano residences and public officials. A multitude of visitors were observed at 'Flags of Honor' throughout  the day and night.  Many with questions and many kindling fond memories or seeking closure.

If you missed the opportunity to observer or 'walk among the flags', you missed a moving experience. For me, it was an honor to be just a small part of the event.

My team goals for 2018 do not stray far from the original goals established last year. However, starting the event planning earlier  permits us to calibrate those project elements that went well and to focus on those elements that we now see with 20/20 hind sight. We now have the time to get every club member involve to lighten the load and implore the 'best-of-the-best' skills throughout the club membership. My past experience is that "friends can be made in any social event, but relationships are made when we sacrifice for a common objective".

The 'Flags of Honor' is a project that strives to be fun, impact our community, create memorable experiences, and raise financial resources to help our fellow men. I might add that participation in this project will create or expand your relationships within our club membership.

So, I ask you to mark your 2018 calendar on November 9,10,11 for the 'PERC Flags of Honor' event and experience. I will respond with additional information and specific call for action as the project moves forward. Please feel free to step-up to the challenge by offering specific skills, ideas and resources that help us make the 2018 project even greater. Communications should be directed to gene@plano.org .
