World Polio Day is Sunday, October 24th.

The eradication of Polio is one of Rotary International's areas of focus.

Rotary's fight against polio:

* Rotary was a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Iniative in 1979.
* Since the first vaccination clinic in the Phillipines in 1979 the number of polio cases has been reduced by 99.9%.
* Rotary members have contributed more the $2.1 billion dollars to fight polio in addition to an incredible amount of volunteer hours.
* This initiative has protected nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries.
* Rotary's advocacy efforts played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the fight.
* Today polio is only an epedemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  However, it's crucial to continue efforts to stop the spread of polio in these countries.
* If we stop fighting polio in these two countries, within 10 years, polio could paralyze over 200,000 children a year.

As part of Rotary District 5810's efforts to raise money to eradicate Polio, we are asked to contribute at least $10 to the effort, your $10 will be doubled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Your $10 turns into $30 to help eradicate this disease.
