MEETING REPORT FOR 4/12/18 MEETING (Photo album):

President Elect KEN ROBERTS dinged us to order at 6:12 PM in the absence of PRESIDENT JAN who is off with  husband EAN  on a two week trip to Hawaii.

KENNY WILSON introduced his daughter MOLLY WILSON.
LISA BLOOMER introduced her guests NIGEL RAMIREZ, and ELISE SKELTON our RYLA students plus counselor PAM CONNER and principal LYNN OJEDA, all from Plano Academy High School. DIANA WRIGHT, guest of RANDY WRIGHT joined us later in the meeting after shopping across the street. 12 club members showed up.

Principal Lynn Ojeda explained that The Plano Academy High School (Web Site) is a four year high school that operates on a “project based” teaching system where the “learners” are assisted by “facilitators” to achieve all of the academic requirements of other high schools in our system. Learners participate in all mandated testing and qualification programs. The school is located in an office building at 1700 Alma Dr. NE corner of Park and Alma.

Students submit applications while in middle school and each year there is a lottery to select the freshman class. Students come from across the district and make a commitment to complete the four years of high school at the Academy. There are no formal fine arts or athletic programs... no football team.

One big learner project is a solar car that is designed to meet the challenge of driving from Dallas to Minneapolis (?) The students designed and fabricated the car. If you drive by the school you observe the fenced in area on the side is not a playground, but a repository for a car frame and various mechanical gadgets that the students have fabricated. In the parking lot there is a solar car trailer rather than a band or football team trailer.

Students are involved in multiple projects throughout their four years, wherein they are challenged to use all of their academic skills on projects. In the case of the car, they create the design using AutoCAD, use calculus to evaluate details, document the project in English class, develop promotional plan in marketing class and so on.

The students spoke about why there were there: “To get a better education,” was the theme, with Nigel observing what he liked was that the school “provides everything you need to succeed!”

The campus has enjoyed much financial and volunteer support from business and industry to include Toyota and other large locals.

The program on the Plano Academy was very well received with extended discussions & questions following the program.  Club members were encouraged to 'stop by for a tour'

Molly Wilson won the drawing but did not get the queen of clubs, so missed out on splitting the NOW $1500 POT!

Escape Expert spent a few minutes (post meeting) to review and discuss the upcoming 'Escape Event/fund raiser'.

Randy did an excellent job of note taking on his laptop but did not save the file so created this report from memory.
