Darren Collins

Project HAND UP

Join us next Thursday June 16th as we hear from Darren Collins of Project HAND UP. Rotarian Darren is a professional variety entertainer who traveled around the world teaching the performing arts and presenting family comedy shows. He has trained over 20,000 puppeteers in 49 states and over 15 countries!
He is currently the International Director for a non-profit in DeSoto, Texas called Project HAND UP. Project Hand Up is dedicated to writing, producing, distributing, and implementing HIV Prevention and AIDS Education puppet and magic shows in East Africa. These shows are designed to reach large audiences with basic health science education that would otherwise not be taught due to their sensitive subject matter.
In 2017 Darren was a recipient of the “Service Above Self Award” from Rotary International for his work in Kenya. He’s a graduate of Rotary University and the Rotary International Leadership Institute and is a member of the Paul Harris Society.

Governor Howard Templin

Welcome our new Governor Howard Templin

Join us as we welcome our new District Governor Howard Templin, he has been married to his wonderful wife Ellen for 32 years. They have three adult daughters, Nicole Templin, Barbara Templin and The Reverend Claire Makins. Ellen and Howard have 2 grandsons, Cal and James Makins.

Howard earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas, Austin. After working as an architect and capital improvements project manager for over 47 years, he retired in July 2020 from being project manager on the University of Texas at Dallas campus.

Howard, a 3rd generation Rotarian, has been a member of The Rotary Club of Dallas since 2009. He is Paul Harris Society and a Major Donor. He was president of the 1st Club in Texas in 2017-
18. Howard has served on the club’s Board of Directors, the Foundation Board, several committees, as well as participating in many of the club’s projects. He is a past District
Membership Chairman, Assistant Governor, and a Lone Star PETS facilitator. Howard will be the District Governor for Rotary Year 2022-23

Christopher L. Smith

Ukraine-Russia Intelligence Briefing

Senior Master Sergeant Retired Christopher L. Smith concluded his almost 23 years in the United States Air Force as the Senior Enlisted Leader for Adversary Intelligence Operations, 324th Intelligence Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. He led over 500 joint-service and civilian personnel in the daily execution of USINDOPACOM’s highest priority intelligence target. Sergeant Smith advised senior leaders on matters influencing force management, professional development, readiness and resource utilization.
Sergeant Smith was born in Graham, Texas, on 21 August 1977. He grew up in Jacksboro, Texas and in 1996, Sergeant Smith enlisted in the United States Air Force. He has served multiple assignments as a Russian Cryptologic Language Analyst to include a special duty as an Interpreter for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Sergeant Smith deployed in 2016 as the Senior Enlisted Leader of the Intelligence Directorate for the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa. Prior to assuming his final position, he served as the Squadron Superintendent at the 17th Training Support Squadron, Goodfellow AFB, Texas. He and his wife of 22 years, Saundra, have three children; Kalyssa (20), Caleb (18), and Joshua (14)

Gus Cabarcas

Combined Arms

Gus Cabarcas is a U.S. Army veteran and served as a combat medic. After transitioning out of the military, he joined the New York Police Department in 1992 and retired as a Sergeant after 21 years of service. On September 11, 2001, Gus was one of many New York Police officers who responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He has a total of over 400 hours spend at both Ground Zero and at the landfill in Staten Island.
Gus has served as a volunteer liaison between Wounded Warrior Project, Hope for The Warriors, and the NYPD. He relocated to McKinney, Texas in 2012 where he serve veterans in the community as the Community Development Manager for the DFW area for 8 years. He has accomplished all of this with his wife by his side for the last 29 years and has two beautiful children, 18 and 16.
