On March 18, 2025, we celebrate National Agriculture Day—a time to recognize the essential role agriculture plays in our daily lives. From the food on our tables to the clothes we wear, agriculture is the backbone of our economy and community.
We are fortunate to be part of one of Michigan’s most important agricultural regions—The Ridge. This stretch of rolling farmland, spanning parts of Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Newaygo counties, is nationally recognized for its prime fruit-growing conditions. The Ridge’s unique climate, rich soil, and dedicated farmers make it one of the top apple-producing regions in the country.
In addition to traditional farming, agri-entertainment has become a vital part of our local economy. From apple orchards and pumpkin patches to corn mazes and farm-to-table experiences, The Ridge offers countless opportunities for families to connect with agriculture in a fun and engaging way. These activities not only generate additional income for farmers but also educate the public about the importance of agriculture. Local favorites like hayrides, cider tastings, and U-pick farms bring people closer to the land while creating lasting memories.
The theme for this year’s National Agriculture Day is “Growing a Climate for Tomorrow,” highlighting the importance of sustainability in farming. The Ridge is a prime example of how innovation and stewardship go hand in hand. Generations of farmers in our region have embraced advancements in technology and conservation to ensure that agriculture thrives for years to come.
Agriculture is vital to Michigan’s economy, contributing over $100 billion annually. As a community, we rely on the success of our local farms, not only for fresh produce but also for economic stability, tourism, and jobs. Schwallier’s is one such example. Phil and Judy Schwallier and their family own and operate Schwallier's Country Market located at the NE corner of Nine Mile Road and M-37. Phil will be our speaker on March 6th.
This National Agriculture Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the farmers who make The Ridge—and our community—so special. Whether it’s visiting a local farm, supporting farm-to-table businesses, or simply expressing gratitude to a farmer, every small action helps.
