November has arrived and we are all about to move our clocks back on Nov. 7, Then we can drive to work in the light, hopefully, but that means it will get dark by the dinner hour again. This saves on energy costs and mental health, I am told.

As my Presidency winds down it is time to think of the future and having members become part of the Board of Directors. Please consider candidacy as board member. We generally meet once a month before our regular Rotary meetings.

Rotary International has declared Africa polio free! That leaves two of the most dangerous places in the world with polio still prevalent - Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Because of political conditions it will be very hard to eradicate polio in both places, and it is definitely not worth the loss of the lives of volunteers to fight polio in person at the current time. We also have to watch Haiti as things deteriorate down there both politically and from earthquakes and hurricanes.

This month we will have discussions on Salvation Army Bell ringing, and Santa Claus Girls delivery at our meeting on November 4^th. We will also induct new members, and discuss the open board and committee positions that will happen in a short time. If time permits I would also like to discuss members signing up for one meeting a month to help provide a speaker. We all have contacts in our larger circles and that could lead to interesting speakers. Updates on our yearly programs such as student scholarships, RYLA Life leadership camp, and the “Hand to Hand” program are needed. On November 18^th, I hope to have a speaker and expect to hear back by the end of the week.

Lastly, I would like to propose a scholarship in Brent’s name that could be given yearly to a student going onto college or a trade school. That person should exemplify many of the same characteristics as Brent himself. Examples would be a welcoming spirit, be your friend for life two minutes after meeting them, and putting God, family, friends, and community ahead of your own needs. Brent lived life to its fullest. Each of you have those same commendable qualities, and it shows through your actions. Unfortunately Brent left us too soon, we can never fill that void, but we carry on with that spirit in our hearts and minds. I personally would like to thank everyone for showing their love and respect for Brent and his family these last few weeks.

What does a Rotary Secretary do?

Alex Arends has been serving as acting secretary for several months and would prefer using his time in public relations especially in regard to the website and social media. Kathy Hegedus, CAO of District 6290 gives the following as a basic description of the secretarial position.

Our club pays an annual fee to utilize Club Runner which allows us to create and distribute the bulletin, meeting notices, bills, maintain membership, and archive bulletins and other documents. This is all computerized, has clear directions and support. So a secretary must have a computer and computer skills. These are the basic duties. More detail can be found on www.rotary.org. Alex or Kathy Hegedus would be pleased to assist in answering any questions. Please let Alex or Greg know if you are interested.
