Thank you to Rotarian Brian Jacobsen for sharing this information:

Most are aware that the month of April is identified as Autism Awareness Month.  There are countless gatherings, walks, public presentations and the like throughout the month. The Autism Society of Washington would like to reinforce the message that we need to “Go Beyond Awareness” into acceptance.   Accept them into your circles of friendships, accept them into clubs and special interest groups, truly accept them and acknowledge them for the skills and talents they have to offer. We urge you all to welcome individuals with an autism spectrum disorder into all facets of your communities.  And we urge you to do this year-round not just in the month of April.

Autism Spectrum Disorders affect 1 in 88 children. Families, caregivers, advocates and organizations strive to bring about positive changes while increasing community awareness. There is no known cure but with early support and intervention, individuals affected can live fulfilling lives as active members of their communities.

April is Autism Awareness Month. Please join us in making April also Autism Acceptance Month.

SAVE THE DATE:  May 18th is the annual Autism Awareness Walk at Patrick Park.  Starts at 1 pm, BE THERE!

A Friendship Exchange with Distric 6450 (Chicago) has been set up by Asst. Governor, Vern Nielson.  The plan is they will send 4-6 couples to D 5060 during the October 4-14 time period (Okanagan Wine festival) and D-5060 will send 4-6 couples to Chicago during the time period of November 2-11. The plan is you will stay with Rotarians for about four days in Chicago area and they will organize events such as visit Rotary head office in Evanston, IL, tour Paul Harris monument, visit a Rotary Club, go shopping and see the sights of Chicago.

It is thought that four days in someone else's house is optimum and if Rotarians would like to be home hosted for longer, we will try to accommodate them with a second home.

For more information or to sign up go the District's website!

SARASOTA, Fla., March 21, 2013 – Garn Christensen (East Wenatchee Rotary Club), of Rotary District 5060, has been recognized by President Obama and ShelterBox USA with a Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his efforts during 2012 to provide shelter, warmth and dignity for survivors of natural and other disasters worldwide.  As we witness the aftermath of disasters like Typhoon Bopha in the Philippines and the Syrian refugee crisis throughout the Middle East, many wish they could make a difference. Christensen knew ShelterBox, an international disaster relief organization, would be on the ground delivering its iconic green boxes containing emergency tented shelter and other lifesaving supplies.
His efforts of raising awareness and funds for ShelterBox enabled the organization to respond to more than 30 disasters in 23 countries last year, providing families with disaster relief tents, cook stoves, water purification units, blankets, mosquito nets, children’s packs and other essential equipment.   “I am truly proud to honor our volunteers, who work hard year-round to support ShelterBox and our efforts to help families rebuild their lives across the globe,” Emily Sperling, ShelterBox USA President, said. “It is through the continuous efforts of our volunteers like Garn that we are able to help so many vulnerable families each year.”
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is a special recognition presented on behalf of President Barack Obama. The award is part of a national recognition program created in 2003 through the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation for individuals of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer activities.

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of announcing to the students at Columbia Ridge Elementary School just how much money they had raised in their Read A Thon challenge.  About one month ago, our club was approached by Reading Specialist, Ronda Billingsley, as to whether we would sponsor a reading contest for the students with the money going to Hurricane Sandy victims.  A lofty goal of 2,000 A/R (Accelerated Reading) points was set.   AR points are earned when a student reads a book and takes a test on it.    Not only did the students meet their goal, they surpassed it by 151 points!   There were lots of cheers and high fives all around when they realized that $500 would be sent in their names to the Rotary Club of Staten Island.

We are once again embarking on a food bank challenge!  After the Board meeting today (Thursday) it was decided to forgo the team challenge and just go with trying to out-do ourselves and bring in more pounds this year than we did last year!  So, this years challenge is to bring in 2000 lbs of food.  We will be focusing on everyday foods for the next month for the Soap Lake Food Bank, and in January will focus on foods that are high protein/ready to eat that can be used for the Ephrata Food Bank's weekend backpack food program in place for school-age kids.

This will be on going thru January.

What is Rotary?  Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and around the globe. The 1.2 million Rotarians who make up more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in nearly every country in the world share a dedication to the ideal of Service Above Self.

Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations.

August is membership month on the Rotary calendar.  In this month's Rotarian, International President, Sakuji Tanaka asks the question, What is Rotary?  What does Rotary mean to us and when asked how would we describe it to others? Do you have a "Rotary Moment"?  Keep that in mind as you look around our community to see who you know that would be a great addition to our club - these are the questions you would most likely be asked should that person have no idea what Rotary is!

Those that were able to attend last Thursday's Rotary/Kiwanis fellowship dinner were treated to a Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner and  a program by Bill Ward of the Columbia Basin Hospital Foundation's bond committee.

Ballots will be going out this week for the bond issue.  Please take the time to acquaint yourself with the issue if you are not already familiar with it.  A 40% turnout is needed to validate the vote with 60% of those votes being in favor to pass the issue.

We had a great program last week featuring Wendy Breznzy and Jenny Sieg from Healthy Community's Community Garden project.  They updated us on the vision of the garden, the plans already in place and the areas still in need.  What a great project!   Though no formal vote was taken it looks like this will be our project for Rotarian at Work Day on April 28th.

We have a couple of events coming up in the next couple of months where help will be needed.  First will be the Community Easter Egg hunt which will take place on April 7th at Lions Park at 1 pm.   Volunteers will need to be on hand around noon to stake areas, hide eggs and supervise.

After that is Rotarian At Work Day which is April 28th.  We are still in the process of finalizing our work project, but this week's program - Ephrata's Community Garden just might be it!

Lastly the annual Sage N Sun youth parade will be held the evening of June 7th.  Bea White has stepped up to help coordinate with Rob and Bonnie and is currently working on the theme.  Please put this date aside to help that night!

Rotarians around the world celebrated Rotary's 106th anniversary on February 23rd with a variety of activities drawing attention to the progress that has been made to eradicate polio and the need to finish the job. Representatives of Rotary International and Sanofi Pasteur, a leading provider of polio vaccine, helped ring the opening bell in four European financial markets, in Lisbon, Portugal; Amsterdam; Brussels; and Paris. A closing-bell ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange featured remarks by RI President Ray Klinginsmith and Michael Watson, Sanofi Pasteur's vice president of global immunization policy, followed by a countdown to the final bell. That evening, the exterior of the stock exchange building was illuminated with Rotary's End Polio Now message, joining other global landmarks in a dramatic visual public awareness campaign to build support for polio eradication.

The Four Way Test Applies

For Every Rotarian who commits to read every District Newsletter from July 1010 to July 1011 and takes the Rotary Information Course, I will give $10.00 to the Rotary Foundation.   I will set up a registration on the district website to keep tract.

As one good Rotarian once said, "The more I learn about Rotary the more I love it."

RI President -Elect, Ray Klinginsmith replies: Oh, it's the clubs - 33,000 clubs! It's just amazing that in 200 countries and geographical areas, you can have 33,000 organizational units, all following the same rules. The clubs operate somewhat differently, but still with a common purpose of fellowship, service, and high ethical standards. We are held together by the spirt of Rotary, and it is an amazing phenomenon. Past RI President Edward F. Cadman used to say, "Rotary is unity without uniformity" and this is still true today. (

Dr. Cadman served as Rotary International President 1985-1986 and was a member of the Rotary Club of Wenatchee)

Dear Fellow Rotarians: We are pleased to report a very successful delivery year for the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP).  Thanks to your generosity, we were able to bring the gift of textbooks and computer labs to almost 1,800 Guatemalan schoolchildren.  Education is the key to ending the generational cycles of poverty that currently plague this region.  This year's Guatemala Literacy Project would not have been possible without your generosity and that of the other 57 clubs and 15 districts that contributed to the program.

We invite you to join again in supporting the GLP in Rotary year 2010-11, when we will be bringing first-ever textbooks and computers to schools in Chimaltenango, Sacatepequez, Solola, Quetzaltenango, Totonicapan, El Quiche and Huehuetenango.  These are severely impoverished areas in the Guatemalan Highlands with some of the worst education and literacy statistics in the Western Hemisphere.

Yours in Rotary,

Glenn Chamberlain and Dick Anderson, GLP National Co-Coordinators 09-10

Did you know that over the last year we have:  Started and supported 42 children in our community in the Let's Read early literacy program, gave out scholarships to 3 deserving high school seniors, sponsored both a youth baseball and football team, provided through the Grant County Health Department childhood immunizations, sponsored textbooks at a school in Guatemala, provided paint to the Grant County Sheriff's department to help cover up graffiti, and purchased and delivered over 250 dictionaries to third grade students in Ephrata, Soap Lake and Wilson Creek?  Are you interested in these projects?  Come to a meeting - we meet each Tuesday at noon at the Country Deli or ask a Rotarian how you can help.  If you are already a Rotarian be PROUD!

EVANSTON, Ill. (March 6, 2009) -- Country music legend Dolly Parton and Rotary clubs may seem an unusual pairing, but their shared passion for promoting literacy more than bridges any perceived pop culture gap. Rotary International today announced a groundbreaking collaborative arrangement with Parton's Tennessee-based Dollywood Foundation to promote early childhood reading. Under the agreement, Rotary clubs in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom are encouraged to support the Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library program, which provides an age-appropriate book each month to children from birth until age five, so that parents and other family members can begin reading to them as soon as possible.
