Report from Mike Griffin
Ambassadorial Scholar Selected from Friday Harbor
Lindsey Youngquist , has been selected to represent District 5050 as an Ambassadorial Scholar for the year 2011-2012. She is currently a student at Seattle University in premed studies and will be traveling to Nepal to continue her studies and deliver "Service Above Self".
Lindsey writes:
It was such exciting news! I am hoping
to be in Nepal for the academic year. I have been working on another painting
fundraising project for The Rose International Fund for Children (TRIFC) that
works in Nepal. It was created by Rob Rose, a Rotarian in Bellevue who has been
starting schools for blind and deaf students and funding hospitals that do
physical therapy and rehabilitation work with disabled kids. He has given me several
reliable Rotary contacts in Nepal and has put me in touch with several Nepalese
Rotarians in the specific region that I want to study and serve in.
The area is called Dhulikhel, it is higher elevation just outside of Katmandu.
There is a medical school there where I can take classes in community and
public health in English. In the Dhulikhel area there are three TRIFC sponsored
operations. There is the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Disabled Children where
I could potentially learn about physiotherapy and rehabilitation surgeries and
also work with kids who are in recovery. There is also the Kavre-Banepa School
for the Deaf and a program at the Sanjiwani School for blind students. Rob said
that I could teach art there, clay to the blind students and a whole range of
creative skills to the deaf students.
I am excited to work with Rotary District 5050 and with the Friday Harbor club
too!
Thank you for your support,
Lindsey
On Another Subject This Week
We conducted a club survey to determine if we should submit an application to the R I Pilot Program to establish a satellite club on Orcas Island. The initiative did not receive sufficient votes in the affirmative to support an application. However, nine club members indicated an interest in pursuing the possibility of establishing a club on Orcas.
Jack Cory has the names and will be contacting those members who are interested in this project.
