An introduction by Area Governor, Susan Guterbock, gave us the pleasure of hearing from our new District Governor Raj Rajagopal from White Rock, B.C. on his first visit to San Juan Island.
He shared his intended focus on this year and continuance through the leadership of District Elect, David Lukov in three areas: Environment (new focus), Peace and Reconciliation, and 'the elephant in the middle of the room' DEI.
Environment: Due to a task force chaired by RI President Jennifer Jones, one can now (as of 7/01) apply for a local or global grant on a specific environmental project and its sustainability. Raj encouraged us to consider forming a new environment-oriented club with like-minded people. A newly formed club in White Rock is called Rotary Club of Nature Celebrators "this is not a nudist club!" Raj offers his help in setting up a new club, rajind@gmail.com.
Peace & Reconciliation: Since the formation of the United Nations, RI official delegation visits their headquarters and meets with Sec Gen of the UN to discuss projects that Rotary can be of help in promoting peace in the world. A Peace Club could be formed by retired military members to address homeless and mental health issues.
Diversity, equality, inclusion (DEI): Recently, we heard from John Moalli, Zach Crichton and his mom, Kelly; Cara Cohn from Sherwood Community Services. Those with disabilities want to be included. They don't want to stand out. Do not underestimate them. Everyone given the opportunity can contribute to their community.
