Thanks to Barb Fagan and Dick Shorett attending a CPR class for Rotary members with Lainey Volk several years ago, Lainey's comment "I wish I had a gavel to get your attention!" resulted in her receiving one, carved from an island tree by the late Eugene Alexander who also made our Rotary gavel 20 years ago.
Director of Outreach and Community Paramedicine for over 35 years, Lainey has dedicated her life to healthcare education and played at HUGE role in the reason why SJC has one of the highest save rates from cardio arrest in the nation. Lainey was honored last year with EMS World/Dynanex Caring Award at EMS World convention.
Our good fortune to live on San Juan Island with exemplary care from our EMS, so many of whom were trained by Lainey.
p.s. When Lainey opened the gift box and raised the gavel, member Chris Reed's comment "a different form of CPR?"
Humor to the rescue!
