Guest Speaker
Lesa Hinchcliffe
President Anthony McGrath opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 31st May 2021.
In the absence of John Thornton, we had to battle through singing a chorus of Advance Australia Fair without him! The Guest speakers table scored the effort 6/10.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Q: When was Perth Town Hall Officially Opened?
Peter (No Idea) Webb’s card was drawn from the pack. Unfortunately, Peter had “No Idea!”
John Hopkin’s card was drawn next and John, without any help from the table, because he had looked it up, correctly answered the question.
A: Foundation Day, 1st June 1870 by the then Governor of WA, Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld GCMG.

For interest, The Weld Club, which is very well known to our members, was named after Governor Weld and was opened in 1871.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: (Anthony McGrath)
As part of the 100th Anniversary of Rotary in Australia, we are sponsoring the Dalkeith Primary School to erect a “Peace Pole” within their School. This is a Rotary initiative coordinated by The Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffen. It is so that schools can think about World Peace and commemorate World Peace Day on 21 September. It will also be a permanent reminder that the Rotary Club of Dalkeith supports the Dalkeith Primary School.

SERGEANT’S SESSION: (Trevor Gorey) with Corporal Jock Laurie
Fines were levied on the following guilty parties.
  • Wine Table-John Hopkins felt so bad for winning the Quiz that he paid for the table Not having any small denomination notes, he contributed twice the fine to the Club’s coffers.  The Club thanks you John and we hope you win again soon.
  • Footy Tipping-John Bolto, not for winning this week, but because you and your family keep winning and emptying the prize pool.  Well done, John.
  • Birthday Boy – Peter Marfleet
  • Kevin Jackson- for dobbing in Gary Dienhoff but for forgetting what he was going to dob him in for.
  • John Lindquist- has recently sold a house, bought a new caravan which required him to buy a new car with which to tow it, and has bought a second-hand boat and will sell his much-loved BMWX5.  Surely all of this is worth $5.
  • Russell Hawkins- for getting into the social pages of the West Australian last week.
  • Richard Ranshaw- because his mother turned 101 and if this is any indication, then we shall have the benefit of his company for several years yet.
GUEST SPEAKER: (Lesa Hinchcliffe)
Our guest speaker is the author of “Entrepreneur to Megapreneur”, a book that follows the business life journeys of 8 local and highly successful entrepreneurs. You will likely know some of the 8, but what you may not know is just how they managed to get to where they are today.

Like those she wrote about, her journey in writing this book was met with many challenges. Tonight, she is here to take us through what she learned along the way and how the knowledge and insights shared by entrepreneurs changed her own outlook on life and business. Please welcome Lesa Hinchcliffe!

Lesa provided a well-presented talk about authors and her process for writing her book.

Lesa informed the Club that 97% of Authors never finish their book. Of the 3% that do finish, only 20% of those are ever published and Lesa is very proud to join the ranks of the published. Our guest speaker is the author of “Entrepreneur to Megapreneur”, a book that follows the business life journeys of 8 local and highly successful entrepreneurs. You will likely know some of the 8, but what you may not know is just how they managed to get to where they are today.

About her book, Lesa advised that
  • Lesa researched local entrepreneurs from WA.
  • The stories all begin in childhood.
  • There are 8 separate stories in the book.
  • Ric Hart (the man behind the Ric Hart chain of stores) was an obvious choice, despite him being extremely hard to pin down in order to interview and gain his story.
  • Others in the book include.
  • Murray McHenry from “Steve’s Hotel”
  • Lew Beale from Aquatic Leisure Technologies
  • Kylie Radford from the fashion label Morrison
  • Peter Cumins from Cash Converters
  • Sasha deBretton from Million Dollar Makeovers and the Renovation Company
  • Peter & Lorraine Hodgson from Orbit Fitness Equipment

All these Megapreneurs have shown the following character traits.
            They all have great integrity.
They use a “touch it once” principle.
Have a good comfortable knowledge for business numbers.
They all drive their goals until they achieved them.
They are all open to opportunities and take action when they arrive.
They all wish to be the “Best in the Business.
They all have a strong trust and belief in themselves, and
They all believe it is never too late to start.

Pres Anthony Thanked Lesa for a very interesting, entertaining, and insightful talk and presented Lesa with a highly sought-after Rotary cake.
