President David Ellis opened the meeting at 6.30pm and welcomed Rotarians and guests.
President David also welcomed our guest speaker Christine Howitz director of Cornerstone HR, and her husband Alex.
John Thornton led the meeting in the National Anthem.

There were nine apologies, eight members are on leave and 38 members were present.
There were no visiting Rotarians or members guests.

COMMITTEE REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins):
Russel reported that the Trust was meeting on Tuesday 17th July to make the decisions on distributions from the Trust for the 2017-18 year.
Club Secretary’s Report (Craig James): no report.
Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath):
Anthony will place the club accounts on the club website after the board meeting.
Annual subscription invoices will be distributed soon.
Anthony also requested members to help find Corporate sponsors for the Cottesloe Corporate Golf Day. The more sponsors the club introduces, the more of the proceeds will come our way.
Club Service: (John Bolto):
That perennially popular event, Guess Who Is Coming To Dinner, will be held on Friday 17th August. A board was circulated to obtain numbers. John requested that members consider being hosts as soon as possible and to let him know so that planning for the event can be expedited.
Richard Ranshaw has a supply of Rotary fruitcakes at $20 each.
Community Service:
About 200 hundred shopping bags have been sold with 1400 still in Dick Sudlow’s garage.
Vocational Service:
Russell Hawkins foreshadowed new wine supplies.

Peter Panek reported that there were no new members in the pipeline and asked members to be pro-active in recruitment.
Youth:
The club’s exchange student, Carlos, will be arriving on Monday 23rd and will be met by President David Ellis.

SERGEANT: (Trevor Gorey)
Trevor, in a robust fines session, extracted contributions from:
The wine table; those celebrating anniversaries; arrivals; departures; himself for adventures fixing the honour board; the twenty past presidents still members of the club; Bob Davis representing the tipping winner; Eagles and Dockers who lacked faith; Richard Ranshaw for his “WORLD CUP” number plate; Russell Hawkins, Ken Ilett, Dick Sudlow, John Saleeba, Bob Davis and Peter Panek for a variety of misdemeanours.
GUEST SPEAKER:
Christine Howitz on Human Resources
Christine Howitz, director of Cornerstone HR, is an award-winning leader that brings over seventeen years of international experience in human resources management, leadership strategy, applied coaching and learning and development principles. Christine came from the UK about 14 years ago and has travelled extensively in Australia since then.
Her talk to us was focussed on how to attract and retain employees which, she said, are a business’s greatest asset and usually its greatest cost.
She said that 90% of employees decide whether to stay or go within the first six months of their employment. Staff turnover is a costly business when approximately $10K is spent on recruiting each employee (based on a $60K salary). Happy employees took only about 10% of the sickies that unhappy employees do.
The important points were:
- Decide when to hire- don’t leave it until you have no time to settle them in.
- Be clear about your requirements
- Spend time getting the new employee up-to-speed.
- To retain a promising employee, be clear in instructions; give them opportunities to shine; challenge them with difficult tasks.
- People don’t quit their jobs, they quit their manager.
Christine answered some good questions on personality profiles and the unfair dismissal laws.

CLOSE: President David thanked the NGC staff Denise and Emma, and Cupid Caterers Many and Sandy.
It was Cupid Caterers last meal as our caterer and Mandy and Sandy were presented with a floral tribute for their excellent meals over the previous years. They will be missed.

President David thanked Christine Howitz for her presentation, presented her with a Rotary fruit cake and closed the meeting at 7.30pm.
