• MetSO concert – Ann Bray spoke of the annual MetSO concert with the Echoes of Ukraine choir to be held at Government House on Sunday, 23 February 2025, at 3 pm. Ann would like some volunteers to help at the concert, please email her on acbray45@icloud.com if you can assist. • Fellowship dinner – The Fellowship dinner has been booked at Lady of Ro in Rokeby Road in Subiaco at 6 pm on Monday, 24 February. The cost is $86 per head for a ten-course chef-tasting menu, including corkage. A minimum of 70 people is required for the evening. • Bicycle Count – Peter Panek advised that he has secured 26 spots for the national bike count from 7 am to 9 am on Tuesday, 4 March. Most of the spots are located in Cottesloe and the Cambridge surrounds. An email with details was sent to all members. Please email Peter on ppanek@merit-group.com.au if you can assist and choose your site. The Club makes $70 per site, thanks to Peter for organising this opportunity.
• Ronald McDonald House – Thanks to the generosity of a member who has paid for the opportunity, the Club has secured another volunteer dinner cooking evening at Ronald McDonald House in Nedlands on Wednesday, 5 March, from 4pm to 7pm. Please let David know on miller@iinet.net.au if you are available to assist.

•          Induction of new member – Ross Mackellar was inducted into our Club. Ross joined the Rotary Club of Singleton in New South Wales 32 years ago and has spent over twenty years living in the USA. He and his wife, Ruth, moved from New Mexico in December and are waiting to move into their house in Nedlands. Ross’ last Club was Rio Rancho where he served in various roles, including President. Welcome to Ross and Ruth to our Club, we hope you enjoy many happy years serving the community.

 

• The World Food Programme (WFP) was established in 1961. Its headquarters is in Rome, and it has offices in 87 countries. It is an international organisation within the United Nations. It is the world's largest humanitarian organisation and the leading provider of school meals, each day WFP provides 418 million school meals. The WFP was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2020.
• The WFP’s focus is on hunger and food security. WFP delivers food assistance in emergencies to those most in need and works with communities to improve nutrition. WFP also provides technical and development assistance, supporting partner governments in building emergency preparedness and response capacity, managing supply chains and logistics, and strengthening resilience against climate change.
• Peter spoke of his experiences over the past two decades working for WFP. He has seen the group move forward from just providing food to establishing logistics divisions so that the food actually reaches its destination, which was not always the case when it was left to governments to distribute.
• Peter recounted his experience with WFP when he was in Iraq in 2004. WFP was asked to provide food for the whole country with a population of 27 million people for a period of seven months.
• Peter talked of the reconstruction project, building up a trucking fleet, coordinating the multiple agencies and establishing a communications system after the tsunami decimated Aceh in Indonesia.
