President Leon Lorenzen opened the meeting at 6.30 pm.
The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.
After singing, members remained standing to remember Barbara Ranshaw and think of Richard at this sad time for him and his family. Barbara contributed to Rotary Club events and attended many of our social occasions. She will be missed by us.

Thanks to Peter Panek for fixing the lectern; it has been a problem for many years, and now it is no longer wobbly.

ROTARY MOMENTS:
• Sailability WA Inc – The Club has received a letter of thanks from the President of Sailability, Gary Griffiths. The Club recently gave $2,500 to the organisation, and the President reported that the sum will help provide a sailing experience that will improve the lives of many less fortunate people.
• Foodbank –The Club has received a letter of thanks from the CEO of Foodbank, Kate O’Hara, who states that the generous donation of $5,000 given by the Club will provide ten thousand meals for West Australians. In the past financial year, Foodbank provided 9.3 million meals in Western Australia.
• Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation
You may recall that in March this year we heard from two volunteers, Nancy Chiam and Janet Reynolds, who have worked for the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation for over twenty-five years each. Nancy has reported that through generous donations of goods, the stall that she and Janet run made over $43,000 in the last financial year. Nancy asked especially that Paul Kestell, Susan Watson and Nicole Khangure be thanked as they have donated really good quality items which sold well.
ACTING SERGEANT JILL SESSION:
The following members were fined:
· Everyone who hadn’t yet applied for their $100 from the State Government yet (that brought in quite a pretty penny);
· Peter Panek for not putting out the President’s chain;
· Michael Snell for not tipping his birthday date which would have been a winner.
SPEAKER: DAVID MILLER – introduced by John Lindquist:
· David spoke about the golf day, usually run in April of each year. It has been an event for at least 42 years. David has been organising the event for the past few years.
· 64 players pay $100 each to enter, of which $70 goes towards the Angelman Syndrome Foundation, the rest goes to the golf club for its green fees and for catering. Some very generous prizes are donated by Club members as raffle prizes and in the end, over $5,000 goes to the charity.
· This year the winner of the David Foulkes trophy was Susie Rich.
David also organises, with Michael Bisset, a book drive for Buk bilong Pikinini in Papua New Guinea. David knows the librarian at North Cottesloe Primary School, who is able to coordinate with other primary schools for David and Michael to collect books from them which would otherwise be thrown away.
· The books are delivered to Sadliers, a transport company which sends the books to Papua New Guinea free of charge.
· David also spoke about selling daffodils on behalf of the Cancer Council. Last year, the two stalls manned by Rotary members brought in over $11,000 over three days.
· This year the daffodils will be sold at Bunnings Subiaco and Bunnings Claremont from Friday 14 August to Sunday 16 August. Please let David know on miller@iinet.net.au if you are available over that weekend.
· Thanks to David for explaining about the activities that he organises.
