President Craig James welcomed Rotarians and guests to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, “the home of Rotary District 9455”. He welcomed Dr Ross Macdonald who will speak on the topic “Cynata Therapeutics”.
President Craig welcomed John Thornton back and asked members and guests to sing the anthem. John gave a starter note and most members followed it. Some even sang other notes as required.

President Craig announced to club members the Order of Australia Medal was recently awarded to our own Mr Winston Lloyd JONES for service to the international community, particularly through eye health programs. Service includes:
- John Fawcett Foundation (JFF): Chair, since 2015. Board Member, since 2002. Involved with John Fawcett Foundation (JFF): Involved with the Rotary Project known as the Bali Eye Clinic in 1991 until the formation of the JFF.

Tony Chien announced that his youngest daughter Peta recently married her boyfriend of 8 years.
Leon Lorenzen announced his daughter Ninette, an engineer with Jacobs will be married to Jason Williams next Saturday.

Club Announcements:
Recent RYLA attendees Jed and Ashley were invited by President Craig to tell the members of their experiences. Jed talked about the personal development aspects of the camp and the concept that good leaders develop from strong people. The course engaged the participants in goal setting and personal growth within an environment where participants could safely explore their aspirations.
Ashley talked about the team building aspects of leadership and role of different personality types in the team dynamic. Both speakers thanked the club for providing them with an opportunity that they highly valued and would recommend to others.
President Craig thanked Ashley and Jed for taking time out to come and tell us about RYLA. He said members welcome the feedback.

Committee Reports and Announcements:
Charitable Trust: (Tim Humphry): Tim announced to members they would receive an email from them asking them to confirm their membership of the Charitable Trust , or if they are not members, inviting them to be members.
Club Secretary’s Report (Trevor Gorey): Trevor announced there will be a Board meeting tonight at Craig’s place tonight.
Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath): Anthony announced that the latest accounts have been put up on the web site.
District Conference 2018 Report: Anthony urged members to book for next year’s District conference.

Club Service: (John Bolto/John Murdoch): John announced there would be a committee meeting at his place after the club meeting next week.
Community Service: (David Miller/Steve Halbert): David reminded members of the annual club Golf Day on Friday 23rd March 2018. 16 teams of 4 can be accommodated on a first come, best dressed basis.
Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Kevin Jackson): Peter advised members that 28 members have nominated to see the Corsini collection on Wed 14th March 6 pm. They will receive a private viewing of the Corsine Collection of treasures from Florence at the Art Gallery of WA which will include a private tour and talk by the gallery director, Dr Stefano Carboni. It will be followed by drinks and nibbles in the Foundation Boardroom. The cost of this event will be $60 head including complimentary parking.

Foundation and International Service: (Ken Ilett/Gary Dienhoff): Ken advised members that the international committee met this evening and the committee are working to have the club’s international project back on-track.
Public Relations: (Peter Robertson/Albert Deda): Peter called on Richard Sudlow to bring President Craig and members up to date on the PR committee project. Richard promised shopping bags before the end of June.
Membership: (David Ellis/David Smith): David announced that the Rotary Means Business next meeting will be at the Wembley hotel next Tuesday at 4.30pm. He encouraged members to attend and to bring guests.
Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): Kim announced he an Neil Wilkie had attended the RYLA closing ceremony and were greatly impressed with the enthusiasm of the participants and he encouraged the club to do more with RYLA in the future.

There was celebration of birthdays, anniversaries, the universal wine table, departure tax, arrivals tax, club service celebration, marriages and of course Win Jones for his OAM. Everybody celebrated Australia Day.
Finally, Sergeant Peter drew members’ attention to the Soleman Teddy Bears Picnic on 11th February at Wireless Park.
Guest Speaker: Kim Smith introduced Dr Ross Macdonald who has over 20 years’ experience and a track record of success in pharmaceutical and biotechnology businesses. His career history includes positions as Chief Executive Officer of Hatchtech Pty Ltd, Vice President of Business Development for Sinclair Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a UK-based specialty pharmaceuticals company, Vice President of Business Development for Connetics Corporation (Palo Alto, CA), and Vice President, Corporate Development for Stiefel Laboratories Inc, the largest independent dermatology company in the world and acquired by Glaxo Smith Kline in 2009 for £2.25b.
Dr Macdonald has also served as Vice President of Research and Development of F H Faulding & Co Ltd and CEO of Living Cell Technologies Ltd. His other positions have included non-executive director roles at iSonea Ltd, Telesso Technologies Ltd, Hatchtech Pty Ltd and Relevare Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Dr Macdonald currently serves as a member of the Investment Committee of UniSeed Management Pty Ltd. Dr Macdonald holds a PhD in Biochemistry, Monash University, a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration, Swinburne University, and he is a member of the Licensing Executives Society.
Dr Macdonald gave an enlightening address on the exciting stem cell work his company, Cynata Therapeutics Ltd, is currently involved in. Cynata Therapeutics Limited is an Australian stem cell and regenerative medicine company that is developing a therapeutic stem cell platform technology, , using discoveries made at the University of Wisconsin-Madison..
Cynata’s platform stem cell technology is based upon extremely important and versatile stem cells known as mesenchymoangioblasts (MCAs). MCAs are a precursor of mesenchymal stem (or stromal) cells (MSCs) which are at the forefront of a new generation of treatments being investigated for such devastating diseases as osteoarthritis, Crohn’s disease and heart disease. Cynata’s proprietary technology utilizes iPSCs originating from an adult donor as the starting material for generating MCAs and in turn for manufacturing the MSC therapeutic product.
Cynata will use its technology to address a critical shortcoming in existing methods of production of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for therapeutic use, which is the ability to achieve economic manufacture at commercial scale. This opens up a wide range of therapeutic and manufacturing possibilities for the Company.
