GUEST SPEAKER: Mark Khangure – introduced by Anita Bourke

  • Mark studied medicine at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and graduated in 1971. Mark emigrated to Australia 1976 as a radiology trainee at RPH. He was appointed as a consultant Neuro Radiologist in July 1982 after an 18 month fellowship in the USA.
  • Mark was instrumental in developing MRI protocols as the first Director of MRI at SCGH and in developing interventional neuroradiology in Australasia, which is a minimally invasive alternative to surgery and which has proved very successful. Mark showed the meeting a number of x-rays of before and after shots which were as a result of successful non-surgical interventions.
  • He was head of department of Radiology and Neurointervention for 12 years until he left RPH in 2007. He was President of the College of Radiology 2008 - 2009 and a recipient of the Gold Medal. Mark was awarded an Order of Australia as an AM in 2017 and received the Hippocrates Award in 2021 awarded by the AMA Western Australia.
  • Mark is married to Edith and they have two sons and one daughter, two of whom are medical specialists.
  • Mark’s other interests include playing hockey (until he had an injury), wine appreciation and long distance walking. He and Edith like to travel and to cruise to different lands.
  • Since joining the Club a few months ago, Mark has already been an active volunteer, at Foodbank, Ronald McDonald House and for the bicycle count and we are lucky to have a member of such calibre in the Club. Thanks to Mark for his talk tonight.
