Stuart Diggins
 
President Jill Elias opened the meeting at 6.30pm.  Welcome to our guest speaker, Stuart Diggins, from PolioPlus.
The meeting was started by singing the National Anthem to Ann Bray’s accompaniment on violin.
 
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Where is the Flight of the Wild Geese monument to be found?
Answer:
Catalpa Park, Rockingham.
Correctly answered by Michael Bisset aided by Craig James.
 
FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
 
President Jill announced that her and Michael’s eldest son, Sam, had graduated from Curtin University on Saturday as a paramedic with distinction. Their daughter, Annabelle, had raced Daniel Ricciardo on Hackett Drive and won. Their youngest son, Edward, had started work in Canberra that day in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
  • The bike count on Tuesday 5 March has been fully subscribed, thank you to Craig James for his work to make that happen.
  • John Bolto is signing up members, family and friends for the AFL footy tipping competition which starts on 7 March. There is a cash prize for the person who signs up the most tippers into the competition.
ROTARY MOMENTS:
  • Anita Bourke thanked David Miller, Win Jones and Shelley McGrath for volunteering to help sort a pallet of medicines which was very complex. Next week a representative from Homeless Healthcare will look at the medicines needed from the pallet for her organisation and any remaining will go to Cambodia.
SERGEANT SESSION: Jason van Straalen fined the following members:
  • Susan Watson for being on the wireless;
  • Nigel Johnson for not having an air conditioner;
  • Kim Smith for being a good guy;
  • Michael Bisset and Hugh Stowell for a landing tax;
  • Geoff Cahif for his bowling prowess;
  • The guest speaker, Stuart Diggins, for not wearing his Paul Harris pin to the meeting and for beating Craig James in rowing.
 
GUEST SPEAKER: Stuart Diggins introduced by Richard Ranshaw:
 
 
  • Stuart is a member of the Rotary Club of Willetton;
  • PolioPlus is more than just the eradication of polio. Through its programme, vitamin A has also been distributed which helps decrease the susceptibility to other diseases. Also anti-malarial tablets and other health products such as soaps have been given with polio vaccines;
  • 91% of polio staff are funded by PolioPlus;
  • PolioPlus has put $17 billion towards polio eradication;
  • Sir Clem Renouf, an Australian who was a Rotary International President, was the initiator and instrumental in spearheading the campaign towards polio eradication;
  • Thanks to Stuart for informing the meeting about PolioPlus.
