Meeting Notes 9th April 2018
President Craig James welcomed Rotarians and guests to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith, “the Home of Rotary District 9455”.
President Craig asked members and guests to sing the anthem. John Thornton announced the members would tonight sing the second verse of the national anthem as well as the first. Words to the second verse (below) were on the tables. John led off each verse with a pause between an emphasis on the last line of the second verse.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine

President Craig welcomed Mr Yosef Asresse who will address members on the topic “Shoutout Sudanese Success Story”.
Shout Out is a leadership program for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds designed to enable young people to speak up for themselves and share their experiences and views on a range of topics with a variety of audiences.
It provides an opportunity for inspiring young people to develop skills in public speaking and media relations on topics they feel passionate about.
Yosef describes his journey as a Sudanese success story.

Guest Speaker:
President Craig said that Yosef had another function to go to so his address was moved forward in the agenda.
Geoffrey Cahiff introduced Yosef Asresse.
Yosef Asresse, 22, was born in Sudan and his heritage is Ethiopian.
Yosef, who migrated to Australia from Sudan in 2003, is a business student at Curtin University passionate about inspiring the youth and bringing out their full potential.
Some of his greatest achievements have been representing Tasmania in Soccer at the AIS and being selected in the
All-Star squad at nationals in Futsal.
(Futsal is a variant of soccer played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football)
While still passionate about Soccer, Yosef now focuses on his personal development and university studies.
Yosef joined UWA Toastmasters in 2016 and completed its course in 12 months. Yosef enjoys public speaking.
Yosef’s Linked -In Profile describes him as being intentional with his personal growth and is constantly reading to add nutrients to his mind.
Yosef addressed the subject of Communications … the means by which we connect to establish common issues.
Yosef described the External communication … how we talk to the world; and the Internal communication … how we address ourselves.
In external communication, it is important to remember 55% of what we “say” is body language … we don’t say it at all, our demeanor does it for us. It is essential to be aware of that. Otherwise, we speak one thing, but say another and that lacks integrity.
In internal communication it is essential we are positive about ourselves. Then we can be positive about others … we will realise that friends are everywhere, we have just to meet them yet.
Yosef has a goal to climb Everest and a dream to establish a Global Shelter home for 100 million homeless children, starting in Sudan.
Peter Robertson asked Yosef if he was a Rotarian and offered to help him become one.
President Craig thanked Yosef, wished him well with his goals and presented him with a Rotary fruitcake. Yosef then left for his next commitment.
Committee Reports and Announcements:
Charitable Trust: (Russell Hawkins): Russell reported the trust funds are fully invested and earning well. He will be unashamedly seeking donations as June draws near.
Club Secretary’s Report (Trevor Gorey): The Board meets next Monday night.
Club Treasurer’s Report (Anthony McGrath): Anthony urged service Directors to submit their budgets for both income and expenditure in the next week because the Board will be considering next year’s budget next week.
Club Service: (John Bolto/John Murdoch): No report.
Community Service: (David Miller/Steve Halbert): No report
Gary Dienhoff reminded members to get their friends organised for what promises to be an outstanding wine tasting this year on the 11th May with booking online now available (your scribe successfully tested the system and got tickets). Please send the flyer to your friends.
Gary is also seeking silent auction samples. The club encourages members to band together to bid for an evening with Ray Jordan.
Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet/Kevin Jackson): Peter reminded members to book for the Fremantle Sea Rescue visit on Monday 23rd April at 4 pm. Members should book on the website.
Bruce Jeanes told members that the Fremantle sea rescue is amongst the busiest in Australia and is well worth visiting.
There are still opportunities for the Carrolup Collection visit.
Sunday 22nd April 2 pm (NOTE DATE) … John Curtin Art Gallery … A guided viewing of the Carrolup Collection and a sumptuous afternoon tea (complimentary) with Curator Chris Malcolm. There will also be a visit to the Aboriginal Studies building to look at the spectacular mosaic floor.
Foundation and International Service: (Ken Ilett/Gary Dienhoff): JFF grant application made.
Ken announced that the application for the John Fawcett Foundation bus was likely to be approved by RI very soon and that placed some obligations on the club to donate to the district funds. President Craig congratulated Ken and Win Jones in particular and the International Committee in general on this achievement.
Public Relations: (Peter Robertson/Albert Deda): Peter encouraged members to give him early advice of events so he can organise publicity for our Rotary “stories”.

Peter reminded members that the club will have shopping bags for $5 and that his Committee will be discussing the Commercialisation of the Project to Rotary Clubs Australia wide. President Craig invited any member with an interest/experience in commercialising the project to contact Peter Robertson or Albert Deda.
Membership: (David Ellis/David Smith): David (in the context of the formation of Committees for 2017/2018) asked members who wished to achieve particular Rotary goals to please discuss it with him so that they may be accommodated.
Youth: (Kim Smith/Leon Lorenzen): Kim reminded members about the accommodation and school requirements for the Brazilian exchange student who arrives on 21st July. He is booked into Shenton College and is billeted for the first three months.
Meanwhile, Holly, our outward bound student, has written a note which will be loaded onto the website for members to read.
Science and Engineering Challenge: (Richard Gorham) Richard is still seeking volunteers and sponsors for the event and those that can assist, please contact Richard (phone 0419 964 131 e-mail Richard.Gorham@iinet.net.au). Richard encouraged members who could not volunteer to at least “drop in” to see what is happening. It is very exciting. It started today with 6 schools involved and there will be 8 schools tomorrow, 8 the next day and 6 on Thursday. The event is in the Silver Jubilee Pavilion at the showgrounds … about 300m past gate 1.
Sergeant: Sergeant Peter Panek, and Corporals Peter Webb and Stuart McCoubrie.
There was celebration of birthdays, anniversaries, the universal wine table, conference tax, lost-on-the-way-to-Geraldton tax, lost-trousers tax, lost dinner plate tax, second verse tax, footy tipper winner and almost winner tax, and Eagles and Dockers celebration tax.
President’s Report:
Notice of the SGM (to be held in conjunction with the next Club Forum on 30th April) has been served. Business to include approving amendments to the Constitution, electing Officers.
District Conference 2018 Report:
The District Conference was an outstanding success, one of which the Club should be extremely proud and deeply grateful for the outstanding efforts of Anthony McGrath.
.jpg) Although RCD had the largest representation the RC of Wyalkatchem was awarded the Trophy for the Club having the highest proportional representation.
Peter Robertson was announced as the Early Bird Registration winner and received a lovely pendant for Rebecca.
RCD Rotarians David Foulkes and Allan Knight were remembered amongst a number of District 9455 Rotarians who have passed away since the last Conference.
Professor Byron Kakulas reminded us of Rotary’s early involvement in his research which has led to breakthrough treatment of muscular dystrophy which has recently been granted US FDA approval.
Prof Kakulas also highlighted the wonderful support to the programme given by the Perron Institute named after its principal benefactor Rotarian Stan Perron.
This achievement compliments Rotary’s support for the establishment of the UWA Medical School and the Rotary Cord Blood Bank and Melanoma Research.
The session on Rotary Projects highlighted programmes that RCD should connect with to maintain a watching brief for opportunities to become involved. The presentations covered:
1. Path of Hope (presented by Rotarian Rebecca Tolstoy who presented to the Club in February)
2. Rotaract (presented by Samantha Fewster who presented to the Club in November)
3. Rotary for Melanoma Research (presented by Prof Melanie Ziman)
4. Kimberly Dental Team (presented by Jan Owen)
5. Prostate Cancer Foundation (presented by Nadine Magill who presented to the Club in April)
6. National Youth Science Forum(Rotarian Allan McLean)
7. Rotary Cord Blood Bank (presented by Peter McKerracher who presented to the Club in February)
8. Aboriginal Reference Group (presented by Ken Whyatt AM MP via video)
9. Australian Rotary Health Foundation – Lift the Lid on Mental Illness.
10. Western Desert Dialysis (presented by Sarah Brown).
President Craig invited any member with an interest in becoming a Club Champion for any of these projects to let him or PE David Ellis know.
DG Lindsay Dry thanked the members for their support and said how proud he was of his club. He especially thanked Organising Committee chairman Anthony McGrath for an outstanding personal effort.
There was universal acclaim for Anthony’s work in coordinating the organisation the Conference and working with the Geraldton clubs to make it the success it was.
John Thornton added his congratulations to those of Lindsay. He said that it was unique in his experience for a Conference to:
1. Run on time;
2. Have such good local involvement and support (the people of Geraldton were fantastic hosts);
3. Have good catering and attractive venues.
John also noted that as a person closely involved in the design and construction of the Queens Park Theatre it was a rewarding experience to be able to attend the Conference in the venue.
Anthony thanked the members of Dalkeith for attending in such numbers and showing such great support. It made his work worthwhile.
