Meeting Notes

10th February 2020

Club Forum

President  John Bolto welcomed Rotarians to the meeting.

The national anthem was sung in a reasonable manner because John Thornton OAM  kept everyone together.

Bruce and JS have asked me to raise the question of using booking sites rather than booking directly with the business. It is expensive for the business and you give away your data in the process. Spend the time and book direct. Ensure you use your credit card as this give you security if the business goes under before your visit.

Question of the Week:

Q: Young Exchange (RYE) is one of Rotary’s most popular and successful programs. When and where was the first exchange?

A: The first youth exchange was when the Rotary Club of Copenhagen (Denmark) arranged to host several American boys in 1921.

Craig J, Peter P and Hugh Stowell all had a crack and were stumped on the date.
Eventually answered correctly by Kim Smith.

Question Time:    John Saleeba
John Saleeba’s questions:
  1. a “roundabout” (like Waratah Avenue or Smyth Rd) takes a month to complete?
  2. The replacement of a large water pipe takes many months (like Rokeby Rd or Johnston St Peppermint Grove) to complete?
I am interested as to whether there is an engineering basis for the time taken.
Ant McGrath tried to answer;
  • Mainly due to Contractor and Contractual issues
  • However need to consider the work you don’t see,  mainly all the other underground services which may need re-location and /or protection.  Also, liaison with all the other service authorities takes n enormous amount of time.
Richard Ranshaw’s solution was to put the Accountants in charge!

Club Forum:    Pres John Bolto
Summary of results:
The overarching commentary was that most were very worthy causes so it was a difficult decision.
  1. CINI – 2.8
Attacking the right problem, many wanted more focus on local issues
  1. School of St Yareds – 2.8
Attacking the right problem has support from many RCs already, many wanted more focus on local issues
  1. Backpacker Medics – 3.1
Money spent well, difficult to see how we can help other than donations
  1. Greenbatch – 3.7
Great cause, show some caution due to poor start.
  1. No More Homeless – 3.9
Great cause with a long time frame and ability to influence at board level.
  1. Foyer Oxford – 3.3
Good project but already well developed and financed, probably better places to put our efforts.

Key Questions
  • How many projects should we support?
  • Should there be a mix of local and international and why?
  • Should we leave room for a future worthy project and not over commitment at present?

After Table discussions two themes resulted;
  • Do small number but well and local.
  • International but concentrate on female education.

Pres John thanked everyone for their participation.
