Meeting Notes 13th July 2020 Guest Speakers Paul Napper and son Kyuss

The club will still run  Zoom meetings to accommodate people that cannot attend in person.

 

President Anthony welcomed our guest speaker and club member Paul Napper and his Son Kyuss.

Correctly answered by tonight’s Sergeant “Jon Steward” who answered Queens Gardens but the President said this was close enough to the correct answer of Queens  Park. Much debate then ensued regarding the reliability of Dr Google as the definitive resource before Jon realised that he was arguing with himself and it was probably best to sit down, be quiet and drink his wine.

 

FAMILY AND FRIEND: Stuart McCoubrie shared the news that his youngest daughter has just given birth to her first child, which was also Stewarts 10th Grandchild. Stewart also noted that this was not a competition – just saying.

Craig James reminded Board Members of the Board Meeting tonight at 19 Kingsland Rd City Beach.

 

TREASURER:  No Report

 

Actual is 39 members & 2 guests. 4 Rotarians were online via ZOOM. Not enough for a bottle of wine as we currently require 47 in total.

 

 

Club Service: No report

 

Community Service: Kevin Jackson advised the meeting of an upcoming dinner meeting at Foodbank on the 24th of August. As this will be limited to 30 members only, it will be on a first come first in basis.

 

Vocational Service: No Report.

 

Rotary Foundation and International Service: No Report.

 

Public Image: Kevin Jackson advised that the WA Ballet Company can recommence performances and he is organising attendance to the Dracula Ballet which in his view is spectacular. Kevin can only accommodate 16 people and these lucky participants will be well looked after by the Ballet Company

 

Membership and New Members:  John Bolto advised that there was a meeting regarding Greenbatch held at the Mens Shed last week. Greenbatch has installed 3 bins at the Showgrounds in the last week and an initial contract with the RAS is imminent.

We are also in the final stages of obtaining a second deposit site for a large block of apartments in Subiaco.

There was also a committee meeting held last week and they have decided to take on a new project, the goal of which is to have a lift installed at the golf club which will be of great benefit to us as a club using this facility.

 

Youth: Kim advised that there is an upcoming Rotary Sundowner event for the Mentees on 23^rd August to help restart this program which has been impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Kim also advised that there has been scant correspondence from our Rotary Exchange Student in Norway, but this is typical of young men. Despite the lack of correspondence, he does seem to be having a great time despite Covid-19.

Sergeant this week was Jon Steward and his deputy was Kyuss Napper.

The fines came thick and fast and were administered to;

 

 

Paul will speak to us about the work he is doing with regard to collecting Sleeping Bags for the Homeless. Paul spoke of the casual chance meeting he had with a homeless person just near his home. When Paul discovered that the person had no warm bedding for the evening, a night which was to be very cold, he rushed home and located a sleeping bag to give to the gentleman.   This lead Paul down the path of organising the collection of sleeping bags and warm clothing and other items to provide to the homeless. Within a couple of weeks of seeking donations,

Paul quickly became the recipient of a vast quantity of goods which has resulted in his home resembling a Good Sammy’s depot. Paul made specific mention of the donations received from Steve Halbert and Jon Steward and our Rotary Club in general. From his home, Paul can organise the distribution of the donations to the homeless. Paul likes to keep it to sleeping bags because these can be easily rolled up and stored during the day and are easily transported. Paul has been approached by a Not for Profit organisation to assist in his work for the homeless and he sees great potential in this association. He is always looking for more donations and volunteers to assist him. Donations can be dropped off at Pauls place on the corner of Vincent Street and Leederville Parade in Leederville or for more directions call Paul direct. Paul is also undertaking regular distributions to the homeless from the Wesley church in St Georges Terrace in the City. Paul also gave thanks to his son's involvement and a keen passion for the Sleeping bag project. Paul’s talk was followed by his son, Kyuss who spoke of his father’s dedication and his determination with respect to finalising his Real Estate course.

Anthony provided the Thanks to Paul for his inspiring talk for his dedication to this worthy cause.
