Past President Anthony McGrath opened the meeting at 6.25 pm.
We welcome our guest speaker, David Philpot, Matilda Bay Rotarian John Butler and Barbara North.
The meeting was opened by singing the National Anthem.
RON WILSON
Members spent a quiet moment reflecting on the life, friendships and contributions made by Ron Wilson to the Club, the Charitable Trust, Rotary and his family and friends. Russell Hawkins spoke about Ron, they knew each other for 60 years, first meeting through football. Ron trained as a pharmacist and after a stint of living overseas, he came back to manage his parents’ material shop in London Arcade. Russell spoke about Ron’s unwavering support of the Club and the Trust and how he stepped in to serve as Club President for a second time when no one could fill the position. Ron was an unstoppable force and a real character. We remember Ron for his friendship and his unfaltering and indefatigable work for the community and especially for the Club and the Trust. We send our thoughts and prayers to Michele and his family.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY:
Engagement – Mike Snell announced that his son had become engaged at the weekend.
Helicopter – Jill Elias announced that her and Michael’s eldest child, Sam, who is a fulltime paramedic, has been selected as one of six in this year’s intake to be a rescuer flying in the Westpac helicopter from September to April. Now that he has been selected after an onerous and vigorous few months of physical and mental tests to get to the stage of an offer, Sam has to fulfil a number of prerequisites, including doing a one day first aid course with St John…
CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
• Business lunch – The Business Lunch will be held in just over two weeks on Friday 4 September 2026 at the Royal Perth Golf Club. This year’s speaker is Professor Jacques Eksteen, talking about critical minerals and metals. Please get your tables together and let John Bolto or John MacKinnon know names and numbers as soon as possible, thank you. There are still a few places left to fill, as many members as possible are encouraged to attend. Mike Wigan from the Men’s Shed has crafted a beautiful side table which will be the prize for the raffle, it was brought to the meeting to show it off.
• Brekky for Better - Mike Snell spoke about the Uniting WA Tranby Engagement Hub which has launched a campaign called Brekky for Better. Last year the Hub provided 130,000 meals to homeless people in Perth. Until the end of August, the following breakfast items are requested:
Instant coffee - 500g
1L long life milk
Raw sugar
Spreads (Vegemite, peanut butter, jams, honey)
Cornflakes and Weetbix
Tinned fruit
Tinned baked beans and spaghetti

Thank you for your support of this initiative.
• Magic Coat Foundation – Jonas Edner spoke about making hospital packs for the Magic Coat Foundation on 10 September 2026, at Canningvale. Volunteers are needed, please email Jonas if you are able to help on jonas@edner.com.au
• Bicycles for Humanity (B4H) WA - Richard Gorham is participating in a team of nine who will ride their ebikes about 680km from Perth to Geraldton in the last week of August. In addition to the fun and camaraderie of a backroad trip through the Midwest during wildflower season, they are doing it to raise much needed funds for the wonderful charitable work of B4H WA.
Since its formation in 2011 B4H WA volunteers have collected, repaired and shipped more than 11,000 pre-loved bikes to rural communities in seven countries across Africa. In addition, B4H volunteers have donated around 2,000 bikes to schools and community organisations in remote outback towns in WA and NT. These bikes are used not only for transport but also to promote mechanical skills and healthier lifestyles.
Your thoughtful contribution to the appeal will go entirely to support B4H WA volunteers to continue this valuable work. B4H WA is 100% volunteer managed and operated. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

GUEST SPEAKER: DAVE PHILPOT – introduced by Susie Rich:
Dave Philpot is a Managing Partner of Ascend Physiotherapy in Mount Claremont. He has extensive experience working with patients from all walks of life, from the sedentary, to the weekend warrior and to all-conquering professional athletes. Dave was Head Physio at the Perth Wildcats during their most successful period between 2010 - 2020, he was Head Physio at the Perth Lynx 2015 - 2020 and was proudly the Head Physio of the Australian Boomers at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Dave's philosophy is simply to move it or lose it, which he applies to almost all presenting patients to help improve quality of life, return to play and maintain strength and function.
Dave suggested that exercise should be a minimum of 30 minutes a day and twice a week exercise should be 50 minutes of moderate to high intensity. Exercise should be varied, enjoyable, consistent and progressive. It should seek to increase strength, cardio, flexibility and manage weight.
When starting to exercise, good advice should be sought first, from a doctor, physio or exercise physiologist or similar, not from the internet. Time should be budgeted each day for exercise, not as an activity to be done if there is time. Working out with friends can help start a habit of exercise and the environment, comfort and competition can aid in habitual exercise.
Strength training is very important as it helps with core, leg and upper body strength and also helps with balance and co-contraction. A programme of strength training should be supervised and individualised, especially at the beginning. Flexibility aids joint health and pain management. A sustained increase in heart rate with cardio exercise is fantastic as long as there is as little risk as possible. Very intense cardio exercise with rest periods may injure some people. Weight management is important but not be that it is the only goal of exercise.
Thanks to Dave for giving us a great overview of the benefits of exercise.
