Meeting Notes
 
24th April 2023
Guest Speaker
Jonas Edner
President John Murdoch opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 24 April 2023.
 
Tomorrow is ANZAC Day, and John Thornton (our only returned serviceman) recited the Ode of Remembrance.
Members observed one minute’s silence.
 
At 10.00 am on Anzac Day, several Club members will meet at the Dalkeith War Memorial, corner of Waratah Avenue and Birdwood Parade, for wreath laying. Any Member is welcome.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Jill Elias spoke of her son, Edward, an Army Reservist, being one of the party at the Len Hall game on Friday, 21 April, involved in a moving ceremony before the Fremantle versus Bulldogs game at Optus Stadium. 105 year old veteran Arthur Leggett was honoured, as were men and women who had fought in Vietnam.

ROTARY MOMENT: (John Murdoch)
Rotary International Convention in Melbourne 27-31 May. 
A Hall of Friendship pass for three days is available for free, at the moment.
 
SERGEANT’S SESSION: (Graeme Sansom)    
  • Graeme imposed a fine on himself for Jane’s birthday.
  • Neil Wilkie and Kevin Jackson were fined for their anniversaries.
  • Johns Lindquist and Martin were fined for being foundation members.
  • Bruce Fiegert was fined for Fremantle’s performance on Friday.
  • Richard Ranshaw, Nigel Johnson and Pek Goh were fined for supporting the West Coast Eagles.
  • John Thornton was fined for being on television.
  • Neil Wilkie was fined for drinking red wine at a committee meeting.
  • Hugh Stowell was fined for his upcoming travel.
  • Bruce Jeanes was fined for wearing maroon and looking all highfalutin.
  • President John Murdoch was fined for marching and then swimming (or vice versa).
  • Mike Snell was fined for being the star golfer.
 
SPEAKER: (Jonas Edner) – introduced by Win Jones
  • Jonas started by thanking Hugh Stowell for introducing him to the Rotary Club of Dalkeith.
  • Jonas was brought up in Malmo, Sweden. When growing up, he bred Dobermans and liked martial arts.
  • His parents were married for over 50 years, and he has eight siblings. His mother still lives in Sweden.
  • Before and after school, when he was 14 and 15, Jonas served an apprenticeship as a pastry chef. When he first lived in Perth, he worked for Miss Maud’s.
  • He first came to Australia in 1991 and returned to Sweden for conscription in 1992 and service in 1993. He moved to Perth in September 1993.
  • Jonas was President of the Swedish Club for seven years.
  • He is married to Diane Wilcox, and they have two daughters and two sons.
  • Jonas has a warehouse in Canning Vale and imports and wholesales goods. He supplies about 200 tonnes of food per annum to Ikea, 30 lines of confectionery and gingerbread and the like.
  • Jonas bought his Claremont café two years ago, and it is going strong.
  • Jonas thinks that Sweden and Australia share similar values and culture though not identical. ABBA is bigger in Australia than in Sweden!
