John Thornton led the meeting in singing the National Anthem. Apparently, the 7/10 effort led by Steve Halbert last week does not count as there is no such note as low D. Who knew???
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
How did the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 between the Portuguese and the Spanish affect Western Australia?
Answer: The Treaty split the world between the Portuguese and the Spanish and created the boundary of the 129th meridian, which is the border between Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Susan Watson gave us a history lesson courtesy of Hugh Stowell’s essay answer.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS:
Craig James spoke of the UWA Choral Society concert Carmina Burana by Carl Orff on Sunday 13 August at 2 pm at the Perth Concert Hall.
Peter Marfleet advised that his son, Jonathon, was currently on a plane back from China, back to Australia for the first time in three years since they have seen him.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Secretary (Craig James) Craig advised that a Board meeting will be tonight. He has received letters of thanks from Rotary International, Shelterbox, Australian Rotary Health and Foodbank WA for the grants given by the Club.
Community Service (Anthony McGrath) Anthony spoke about the rewarding and interesting day at Foodbank for eight Club volunteers on Friday, 7 July. 485 hampers of frozen food were packed. The hampers are sold for $10 each and have meals for one person for seven days. There are three more days booked in to volunteer at Foodbank later this year. Anthony thanked Anita Bourke for the high-vis vests she has organised, which look very fetching and eye-catching.
Environment Services (John Bolto) John spoke of the upcoming tree planting on the Canning River this Saturday, 15 July. Information for those who have volunteered will be sent out shortly.
Other Announcements Anita Bourke asked for two volunteers to help pack up PPE next Wednesday, 19 July, at 9 am at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital; please let her know. Anita reminded the meeting that our Rotary Exchange student, Mathilda Hontoir, from Belgium, is coming at the end of July.

Jill thanked Anthony for organising the Foodbank volunteering experience and Anita for providing the vests for the Club.

Fines were dispensed for the following:
- John Hopkins for bringing alcohol into the club tonight, hidden in a brown paper bag which didn’t fool anyone.
- Susan Watson for having letters published in both The West and The Australian.
- Kent Warburton for having five members of his family mentioned in the footy tipping dispatches.
- Peter Marfleet for forgetting to put in his footy tipping and only managing 3/9 from the automatic picks given to him.
- Anthony McGrath for selling at the Men’s Shed apiary five hive roofs valued at $60 each for three jars of marmalade (I have some magic beans if you like, Jack, I mean, Ant).
- Craig James for coming early tonight and messing up everyone’s timing.
- Russell Hawkins for owning a Porsche. Enough said.
GUEST SPEAKER: Michael Jenkin – introduced by Hugh Stowell

- Michael Jenkin was appointed by Attorney-General John Quigley as a coroner in July 2019.
- In Australia, all coroners are legally trained, unlike in other jurisdictions.
- In Western Australia, there are four coroners, the State Coroner, the Deputy and two Coroners. There are also medical officers, forensic pathologists, and counsellors for liaising and assisting the families of the deceased and managing expectations, Sergeants and solicitors assisting. All magistrates are also coroners but only exercise their powers as coroners in rural areas of Western Australia.
- In Western Australia, there are approximately 17,500 deaths per annum of which 2,500 become coronial. Coronial intervention happens when the death is unexplained, violent, unnatural or in certain circumstances such as when there is a death in custody.
- The body is taken to the State Mortuary and tests are performed. There is a CT scanner and sometimes the forensic pathologist can tell the cause of death by the scan alone.
- The verdicts pronounced by a coroner can be either death by misadventure, unlawful homicide, accident, accidental overdose or natural causes.
- There are two types of inquest conducted by a coroner, either mandatory or discretionary. The inquest is a fact finding mission, with the outcome for future death prevention being a satisfying result.
