  • A letter of thanks to the Charitable Trust:

Dear Tony,

I wanted to personally thank you and the Management Committee for your very kind donation of $8,000.
This will enable us to purchase an autoclave machine for our very busy clinic in Highgate and help us continue supporting some of Perth’s most vulnerable.
It’s wonderful to have the support of your Club.

Best regards
Alison

SERGEANT SESSION: Jason van Straalen. Fines were dispensed as follows:
  • The Sergeant said he’d pay dollar for dollar for anyone who wanted to contribute to the box for no reason. Some members have not run that fast for years. Thank you for your contributions, Sergeant!
  • Kevin Jackson and Richard Ranshaw for a loud shirt tax;
  • Kent Warburton for an arrival tax;
  • Kevin again for coming up to John Bolto to ask if John Bolto was attending tonight;
  • A tithe scheme was introduced by the Sergeant for all the Melbourne Cup sweep winners, including Jonas Edner, John MacKinnon, David Ellis, John Martin, Leon Lorenzen, Ken Ilett and John Lindquist.
GUEST SPEAKER: Dr David Haig ‘7 centimetres per annum’ - Introduced by Kevin Jackson

  • David Haig studies ancient seas from approximately 350 million years ago.
  • Through his research, he has been able to map the course of the continents over the years and the collision zones past, present and future. Each year, the continent of Australia moves seven centimetres north, and Sundaland moves three centimetres eastwards, putting both areas on a collision course.
  • One way to determine the age is to look at olistoliths, deposited deep-sea ooze.
  • David mentors many young geologists, including Isaias Santos Barros, also a guest at dinner. Isaias won an international competition for the best 2021/2022 paper on the collision path of Timor. Isaias was also part of David’s team, which worked out that the age of the Matebian range was not 16 million years old but, in fact, up to 200 million years old.
  • David told us that change is continual and that in the twenty minutes he spoke, we had moved 0.0000022 millimetres to the north.
  • Thanks to David for a fascinating talk on an interesting topic.
