GUEST SPEAKERS Jeff Leach and Bronte Parkin - introduced by Paul Kestell

In 1996, Club members of the Rotary Club of Lane Cove founded what is now known as the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Its main aim is to raise funds for research, to raise awareness of the cancer and to supply information and support to tens of thousands of Australian men affected by the disease. It is a broad-based community organisation, and Rotary representatives serve on the national and State boards.

PROST! Exercise 4 Prostate Cancer Inc. is a Western Australian not-for-profit group exercise programme started in 2012 which currently serves 600 members at six outlets at Crawley, Fremantle, Joondalup, Leederville, Loftus and Mandurah. It encompasses the motto of Mateship. Muscle. Mood. Tailored exercise benefits most men with prostate cancer before, during and after treatment and managing side effects. The sessions are run by exercise physiologists. Participants pay $12 a session which covers the basic costs of running the programme.

As Jeff was on the State Board of PCFA he was offered a PSA test each year. Despite being asymptomatic his results three years ago showed he had a PSA of six. His prostate was removed, and luckily the cancer had not metastasised.

Bronte is the secretary of PROST! and he reported that the recent generous donation of $12,500 from the Charitable Trust would be used for two new outlets: the first country site, based in Busselton, and a site at Curtin University.

The main aim of talks like these is to get men to know their PSA. It is a disease with a 96% survival rate if caught early enough.

Thanks to Jeff for his personal talk and to Bronte for the information.
