Meeting Notes 18th February 2019 - Vocational Visit (Feb 19, 2019)

President David Ellis welcomed Rotarians. He particularly made note of our member David Miller OAM who had recently been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to Hockey in WA. David has been involved in all manner of roles within Hockey over an extended period.

In his response, David thanked all members for their well wishes and especially Peter Panek who thought highly enough of David to put him forward. David showed his great thanks by providing a bottle of wine per table which was greatly welcomed by all members.

President David Ellis also welcomed John Bolto who will speak to members regarding Aurora Labs and 3D printing technology.

Only visitor is our exchange student Cadu. It was noted that he is now one of us and hence should not consider himself as a visitor!

Charitable Trust: (Ken Ilett): Nothing to report on the Charitable Trust.

Club Secretary’s Report (Craig James): There is a Board Meeting this evening at Kim Smith’s house.

Members who need to please pay by Direct Debit for next week’s Fellowship Dinner.

Noted that Anita’s Nokor Tep Hospital fundraising weekend has seen an inflow of funds into the Project account in the amount of >$30,000.

Subsequently, Anita mentioned that an additional $30,000 had been lodged into the RAWCS account hence the full amount of monies raised was >$60,000. Members showed their appreciation and admiration for her fantastic and fulsome hard work.

Members Attendance: 41 members at 67% attendance rate.

Club Service: (John Bolto): John advised members to ensure that they book their Guest in properly for meetings. If in doubt please send him an email.

Community Service: (Nigel Johnson) At the meeting tonight a further 95 Rotary Shopping Bags were sold.

David Miller; Noted that the Golf Day is on 29^th March 2019 at NGC. Need 4 more Teams to be entered.
The Wine Event has been put back three weeks due to a late Vintage, to 3 May 2019. Ray Jordan has a couple of innovations being, Champagne (Moet) and a South Aust winery! Two WA wineries will also be in the outstanding line-up.

Vocational Service: (Peter Marfleet): Peter remaindered members that the Fellowship Dinner is being held at Chopsticks restaurant next Monday. NO MEETING at NEDLANDS next MONDAY.

15 people attended the Vocational visit to Aurora labs this afternoon.

Duyfken Sailing event is all organised and under control.

Foundation and International Service: (Ken Ilett): Meeting had before the Club meeting. They resolved to apply for a grant for the Nokor Tep Cambodian Hospital in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Perth.

Public Relations: (Ray House): Nothing to report.

Membership: (Peter Panek): Peter noted that a recent RI Survey indicated that the biggest reason why people join Rotary is because of a personal invitation getting them along to a meeting. Therefore, please invite someone along.

The Bike Count is fully organised with 21 members participating and one non-member. However, it was a little like pulling teeth.

Youth: (Kim Smith): Hollie (ex-out Bound) will address our meeting on 13 March 2019, please ensure attendance to show support. This will be a Ladies night.

We will sponsor a total of 6 students from the Quinns Baptist College to attended RYPEN this year after a year’s lay-off last year.

Anita Bourke reported on the very successful Nokor Tep Women's Hospital fundraising Cocktail Party.

Sergeant Trevor Gorey reported on the Men's Shed progress.

Men’s Shed: (Trevor Gorey)

Things are progressing very quickly. Michael Chaney, as Patron kicked in $50,000 into this project which was enormously generous.

A draft lease agreement is in train. Applications for funding has been made to Lottery West, Racing & Gaming and Julie Bishop.

The project will need a further (min) $50,000 to make a start. Trevor will be making representation toe RCD Board and Charitable Trust.

Consider attending the Rotary Leadership Courses. Note the other function coming up such as next week’s Fellowship Dinner and the Golf Day on 29^th March and Wine Night on 5 May 2019.

The Board has agreed we would make Monday 11^th March a Ladies night as Holly Frederickson will be speaking about her year as a Rotary Youth Exchange student.

GUEST SPEAKER:

John Bolto

John spoke about the Vocational visit to Aurora 3D Labs. His disclaimer is that he is a shareholder.

Aurora started 3D printing in a very small way in Melville a while back. After a year they were selling printers for $50k which was ten times less than what was normal at that time.

Their goal is to be able to print fast enough to Change The World.

Currently, 3D printing costs are 30% cost of the printer and 30% cost of the feedstock powder.

Aurora is trying to be fast and cheap!

Due to scale powder costs have dropped 50% in 2 years.

Aurora has developed new techniques that enable them to print multiple layers at the same time. Hence this results in printer speeds 50 times faster than current conventional. They are also making powder feedstock to be able to vertically integrate their operations. They also are concentrating on certification of their printed metal parts by independent 3^rd parties.

They have set up a new venture called Additure Now (JB is GM of this venture). It takes clients through the process of going from old to new 3D manufacturing techniques.

Currently, they are looking at cost savings of 50% on old tech.

Questions:

Ray House: Are they staying in WA? Ans: yes

Chris Cole: Ball valve, Cost & Time? Ans: Cost about the same, time 3.5 hours!

Tony Chien: Accuracy of printing? Ans: 20 -30 microns hence 0.1mm machining of some surfaces.

John MacKinnon: Are they worried about Chinese copying? ANS: yes of course but patent techniques can make it difficult for them.

Chris Cole: Do applications include medical and auto? Ans: yes, indeed plus looking at some large format stuff, such as structural steel.

Anita Bourke: Can they print in Titanium? Ans: Yes, Titanium is a very good print medium plus they can dial up the porosity of the part to enhance medical implants.
