President Jason van Straalen opened the meeting at 6.30 pm on 19 July 2021.

I think we have John Thornton back with us tonight hence he may be able to start us off in the appropriate manner by singing a chorus of Advance Australia Fair! If not, we are on our own!

WELCOME to our Guest Speaker and any other Guests:

Welcome to Ms Annie Fogarty AM who is our Guest Speaker tonight. Annie will be telling us about The Fogarty Foundation. Welcome.

Neil Wilkie mentioned that his daughter is finally on a plane leaving London tonight. Hence, he and June will be celebrating her return.

Craig James had a pleasant day employing his Grandsons delivering Raffle Flyers into letterboxes in Nedlands while he drove the car. Also, his Rowing Club put on a testimonial dinner for him for having been involved in the Club for 50 years! ED: Congratulations Craig well deserved!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: ( Jason van Straalen)

Brian English’s Funeral Service this Wednesday 21 July 2021 at 10:30 am, Nedlands Catholic Church (Holy Rosary), cnr Thomas & Elizabeth.
Rotary Club of Matilda Bay is having a Corporate Charity Golf Day supporting Mental Health Awareness on 29 October 2021 at Mt Lawley Golf Club. Please see me if you want a team or know possible Corporates!
Anita Bourke is doing wonderful things. She has been involved in sending a container load of sanitiser to Cambodia.

SERGEANT’S SESSION: ( John Lindquist ) John has been waiting a long time to dish out some fine;

Mike Snell having had a nice day out-to-lunch.
John Hopkins - He has been confined to WA for the last 18 months & recently travelled all over the Kimberley.
Peter Panek – New car which will be tested on a camping trip shortly.

SPEAKER : (Annie Fogarty - The Fogarty Foundation)

Pres Jason invited Lindsay Dry to introduce Ms Annie Fogarty AM who will speak about The Fogarty Foundation.

Lindsay mentioned that Annie & Bret started The Foundation in 2000. It is predominately concerned with providing opportunities and education for young people. Annie is also involved in a number of Board positions.

Annie was awarded an AM in 2013 for her work in the educational space and has a number of university honorary Doctorates for her educational works. In 2020 was awarded WA Women of the Year.

Annie talked about The Fogarty Foundation of which a number of the important points are detailed below.

The focus of the foundation is to build strong communities in WA and to do this means educating the young.
Their own children are heavily involved in the Foundation.
The Foundation is a Public Ancillary Fund with DGR tax status and was founded in 2000.
Their strategy is to concentrate on young people and education is where the best impact can be obtained.
They also concentrate on empowering young leaders who then form self-sustaining cohorts to spread the word by words and action.
They have grown to know the education sector very well.
Their logo is a water drop causing ripples, hence they have a couple of Foci.
- Firstly, Next Generation Leaders
  - Using particularly good UWA 7 other university students
  - Ensuring excellence in education
  - Ensure Future Ready students by getting all young students to learn computer coding. This has also helped in community building.
- Also Fogarty Advance
  - Helping disadvantaged and dysfunctional students in some schools facing many difficulties. They looked at examples from overseas in helping solve some of these intractable problems.
  - Their most valuable strategy is to concentrate on great leadership in these schools and provide peer support within these schools.
  - Currently working with 111 schools that impact 50,000 students, 60% have shown significant improvement.

Annie is inspired because she knows that improving education will definitely improve children’s lives and this, in turn, will improve WA Communities.

Currently, Australia’s educational performance is declining. Children’s education levels are 12 months behind what they were 20 years ago. WA has the lowest ATAR participation rate ( ~ 35%) in the Country. We must build higher aspirations for our young people.

President Jason thanked Annie for an interesting and informative talk. We now know about The Fogarty Foundation. A beautiful Rotary fruit cake was given as a token of our appreciation.
