Meeting Notes 11th March 2019 - Pride of Workmanship (Mar 12, 2019)

President David Ellis opened the meeting with a rousing rendition of the Advance Australia Fair led by John Thornton.

He then welcomed the guest speaker Hollie Fredrickson and her family plus the Pride of Workmanship Award recipients Ryan Carey and Zac Phillips from Kirkwood. Also, a welcome to Cadu, our exchange student and returning guest Greg Hart.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

David Miller gave an update on the golf day scheduled for 29th March, still chasing one team, plus he also updated the meeting on the line up for the wine tasting night. The highlight being the presence of Moet this year.

Peter Marfleet gave an update on the Duyfken cruise, well received by all and despite the weather threatening earlier in the day, it was perfect weather if a little slow when under sail.

Kevin Jackson informed the meeting that the Post will be covering both the golf day and the Duyfken cruise in the coming weeks.

Peter Panek thanked the 22 members and friends who participated in the bike count last Tuesday 5th March.

Trevor Gorey also announced that the Men’s Shed lease was to be signed this week by the RAS.

PRESIDENTS REPORT: David Ellis.

1. Question of us all -"Membership & New Club Members - to whom have we each recently spoken to about Rotary - and

have we also invited them to attend a Club Meeting" !?
2. Club Events -
NB - many social and club events of great note are to follow in the months ahead ... and as reported on by Directors/ Committee Chairs ..... all are to be enthusiastically supported please .... a hard core of club members attend,

participate in most of these events - however increasingly, many don't !?
3. Being close to 3/4 way through the Rotary year - reflect on what we've achieved YTD as a club & individually on our own Rotary journey; and what we also hope to accomplish in the next 3.5 months, being the balance of the Rotary year.

4. District Events -
Besides the many Club events that preoccupy us - remember our wider Rotary District and International

commitments too - eg.
- DG's Newsletters for many district and other D9455 Club events we are called upon to support;
- District Conference in 5 / 6 April - both the DG and our club want all newer members to attend and at least half the club

active membership to do so [ that's > 32 from RCD ] - Costs of members and guests attendance have been reduced,

eg. $50 Saturday plenary sessions [ $49 Fri night & $80 Saturday Dinner ] and will be a great value for money.
- Rotary Education & Training - while PE John Bolto and PN Anthony McGrath will be attending PETS shortly;

- All club members should seriously consider embracing eg. Rotary Leadership Institute FOC training seminars [with

lession 3 due this Sunday 17th March - with Dir. Nigel Johnson attending.

PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARD: Introduced by Chris Cole.

The Kirkwood Deli on the corner of North St and Kirkwood Streets in Swanbourne has been in existence for several decades and is an icon for the local Cottesloe and Swanbourne Community residents.

It has had several owners over that period and was bought 4 years ago by two very experienced and professionally trained chefs, namely, Zac Phillips and Ryan Carey. Both have worked locally and overseas and prior to purchasing the shop were the chefs on Paul Allen's, Superyacht "Octopussy"(Paul was Bill Gates 21C at Microsoft). As further background to their capability Super yacht chefs are a vital element of the multibillionaire set who expect and demand the absolute best food and service possible.

When Zac and Ryan purchased, they shop it was fairly run down and had a limited range of product, as the owners were getting too old to maintain it. As such they invested heavily and completely renovated the shop and expanded the product range, to make it a modern, upmarket, gourmet food Deli, catering to the local community’s needs.

Their Vision for the new store was:

"To establish a local corner store that brought people together, while providing wholesome produce-driven food that was fresh, fun and house made".

The turnaround of this store to meet that vision and the community support has been nothing short of amazing, as when they started, they had 12 staff and now have 60 to meet the consumer demand. In meeting this target they also now have 6 chefs to produce the daily fresh food requirements.

Their extensive range of products offers gourmet food in terms of a patisserie, fresh produce such as bagels, rolls, bread etc., barista-made coffee, chef prepared take away meals, organic, foods, oil, condiments, dressings, jams and even flowers, The shop is always busy, and they have further expanded the business to cater for corporate and private functions and now provide lunches to PLC, Swanbourne and North Cottesloe primary school. Their success at PLC has also resulted in them opening a shop in their Wellness centre.

They have also now recently opened another "Little Kirkwood" shop in Subiaco.

As part of their Vision to become very involved in the local community they sponsor and provide services to the local Tennis Club, Associates Rugby and the local Cricket club.

In my view, Zac and Ryan satisfy the PoW criteria with a proven "high standard of performance and workmanship", which is reflected in the successful growth of their business and are therefore very worthy of a Pride of Workmanship award from the DRC.

President David presented the plaque to Ryan and Zac and Ryan thanked the club for their recognition and said it meant a lot to Zac and he and all of their staff.

Next President David asked Michael Bisset to introduce Hollie Fredrickson, our returning Exchange Student to give us a presentation on her time in Switzerland. Here is a copy of Hollie’s speech notes.

GUEST SPEAKER: Our RYE (Outbound) Student Holly Fredrickson

Hello everybody,

My name is Holly and thanks to your generosity as a club I was able to go to Switzerland

for a twelve month exchange and tonight, I have the honour to share with my experiences

with you all. Last year was the best year of my life, and I learned so much about myself

and about the beautiful country of Switzerland, including their culture and the language.

I arrived in Switzerland on January 18th of 2018. It was a shock when I flew over

Switzerland and saw the snow over the hills from my window. I was greeted at the airport

by representatives of the Rotary club of Winterthur-Kyburg and members of my host family

in Switzerland. I remember when I went outside for the first time and stepped out of the

airport, and I froze straight away despite wearing layers upon layers of thermals!

After only four days in Switzerland, I went by train to a small town named Bischofzell in

northeast Switzerland with the other exchange students, who also arrived in January. We

went to Bischofzell to attend our language camp and welcome camp. The language camp

lasted almost two weeks and we completed more than 60 hours of German lessons and

held workshops on the exchange rules and on the culture and education systems in

Switzerland as well as on the cuisine and customs so that we were prepared for the

coming year. We also made a day trip to the town of Stein am Rhein and Schaffhausen,

where we visited Rheinfall the largest waterfall in Europe and explored the city. We were a

group of 27 January inbounds and nineteen of us were from Australia, four from New

Zealand, three from Argentina and one from Brazil.

My first host family was the Blum family. I was lucky enough to live with such a friendly and

amazing family! I think I learned a lot about myself and Switzerland with the Blum family. I

was lucky enough to be able to ski twice during my stay with the Blums, and they even

were kind enough to pay for a days’ worth of lessons- enough so that the next morning I

could make it down a slope without falling. They also taught me how to play jassen whilst

we were on a ski vacation, which is a Swiss card game played with four people which made

a lot of fun, and I competed in the Rotary-Club of Winterthur-Kyburgs annual Jassen

competition.

During the spring holidays, I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Italy with the Blum

family, where we visited Florence, Pisa and Castiglioncello which is a small Tuscan

beachside town. While we were in Italy, I had the most amazing time with my two host

sisters and host parents. We did hikes, day trips, and we often went swimming at the

beach. And of course, I can’t forget all of the pizza, pasta and the great gelato in Italy.

After the spring break, I switched to my second host family, the Baumgartner family. They

really welcomed me into their family with open arms, and within weeks they really did feel

like my second family. During my time with the Baumgartner family, we did a lot of

barbecues played a lot of card and board games and spent a great time together.

Before the summer holidays, I was lucky enough to participate in the Rotary Eurotour with

Beloeurope. It spanned over almost three weeks and it was absolutely amazing to be able

to explore Europe with my exchange student friends. We visited Paris, Brussels,

Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Postojna and Venice.

It was so amazing to be immersed in the cultures of such amazing cities that I would never

have dreamed I would have the opportunity of visiting.

After Eurotour I had four days of school before the summer holidays. These school days

were filled with activities such as acting out plays for a day in theatre class and excursions

to other Swiss cities for classes such as biology.

During the summer holidays, I visited the Morteratsch Glacier with the Baumgartner family

and hiked to a hut to spend the night before returning the next morning. It was an amazing

hike and a wonderful experience to stay in the hiking hut.

I was also fortunate to visit Bolsena in Italy with the Baumgartner family. It was so nice and

we stayed there for almost two weeks. It was two weeks of swimming, fun and more Italian

food and I found my love for Panna Cotta. I also went on a day trip to Lucerne with Fabia

my eldest host sister from the second family, and Brigitte my second host mother and it

was such a gorgeous city, we had a great day.

My last family were the Toggenburgers and I really had a great time. We went to Zermatt

and Bettmeralp during the autumn holidays which were so stunning and located in south-west

Switzerland, right next to the Italian border. I had a great time and we went mountain

biking, hiked a lot and saw the beautiful Aletsch glacier. We also climbed to the Breithorn

peak which is at 4,164 meters above sea level, it was a lot of fun and I was really happy

that I made it to the peak.

I also participate in a camp with my class, and we went to Delemont, a city in the French

part of Switzerland where we learned about the topic of bilingualism from Monday to

Friday. We travelled to Biel, which is the only official bilingual city in Switzerland, meaning

that in Biel every document, street and store is in both languages for two-day trips and did

a scavenger hunt and also did interviews on bilingualism with people from Biel, which was

used in a report that we constructed for our German lessons. We were in groups of four or

so, and everyone had appointments to go to in these groups, and individually organise our

travel and other aspects of the interview without the help of our teachers. My group

interviewed the director of a bilingual theatre who by coincidence was trilingual and from

Australia.

I also had the Rotary and Rotex weekends. There were two Rotary weekends throughout

the year and two Rotex weekends.

The first weekend was the Rotex weekend, organized by a group of Swiss who have

already returned from their Rotary exchange. The Rotex weekends are divided into

eastern and western Switzerland and I was part of the eastern half of Switzerland for the

Rotex weekends.

The rotex winter weekend was our first weekend which took place on the Rigi a mountain

in central Switzerland. This weekend was the first time that we met our oldies who were

the exchange students that came in August from countries in the northern hemisphere. On

Saturday, we went to the Rigi, took pictures and enjoyed the beautiful view. Then we went

back to the house where we were staying, played music, danced, played games and

relaxed. On Sunday we went sledding in the morning and then played in the snow before

travelling home to our host families by train.

The second weekend of the year was the Rotary farewell weekend for the August

inbounds of 2017. For this weekend we drove to Tenero in the Italian part of Switzerland

and enjoyed warm June weather. We spent the Saturday doing sports, swimming and

hanging around in our tents where we stayed on Saturday overnight. On Sunday we went

to Lugano and had time to walk through the beautiful city and enjoy an ice cream. We

spent this weekend with all inbounds from all over Switzerland.

The third weekend was the autumn weekend with Rotex. We drove to Emmetten, a small

town on Lake Lucerne, where we all stayed together in a hut. This weekend was with our

newbies on our respective sides of the east or west of Switzerland who arrived in August

2018. We spent the Sunday hiking and woke up early to see some beautiful views sunrise

over Lake Lucerne.

The Last weekend rotary weekend was with all exchange students for the farewell

weekend of January inbounds and was in Zermatt. This weekend was by far my favourite

and it was sad to say goodbye to other exchange students that I knew I wouldn’t see again

before I left to come home in early January. We were very busy on the Zermatt weekend

and did a scavenger hunt through Zermatt, we went to a disco, had fondue for dinner, had

an international evening over each of our countries and the January inbounds received our

results from the September language test. On Sunday we went with the Gornergratbahn,

from which we had a beautiful view of the Matterhorn. After that we had lunch and then we

had free time in Zermatt before travelling home on the train.

I would like to thank everyone in the club for this amazing opportunity of my exchange year

once again. It was truly the most amazing and "the best year of my life". Thank you.
