Guest Speaker Deanne Dymock

President David Ellis opened the meeting with a rousing rendition of the Advance Australia Fair led by John Thornton.

He then welcomed the guest speaker Deanne Dymock , Donor Relations manager from Parkinsons WA.

The award was disputed by another table which had an identical card. The objection was disallowed.

CLUB AND COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Charitable Trust: Russell Hawkins reported that Michael Chaney has agreed that his $50,000 donation to the Men’s Shed should be funnelled through the Trust and the Charitable Trust also provided a separate and generous donation of $25,000 of its funds to the Men’s Shed to support the Men’s shed set-up costs.

Secretary: Craig James reported that there are now twelve members registered to attend the District Conference on the 5^th April and encourage all members to make an effort to attend.

Treasurer: Anthony McGrath has two loose change money boxes. He also reported that the TryBooking.com site is now open to book for the Wine Tasting night on the 3^rd May at Claremont Yacht Club.

Club Service: No Report.

Community Service: David Miller announced a prize for the ‘best-dressed golfer’ at the Golf Day at the NGC this coming Friday, the 29^th March.
He also encouraged members to round up their family and friends for the Wine Night on the 3^rd May.

Public Relations: Kevin Jackson distributed copies of the recent Post article on the Pride of Workmanship award last meeting. He also informed the meeting that the Post will be covering the golf day and suggested that the ‘best-dressed’ golfer would get the club some good publicity.

Youth Service: Richard Gorham is still looking for a few people to help with the National Youth Science & Engineering Challenge. Two more on Sunday 31^st March for setting-up and two more on Thursday 4^th April. He encouraged members to attend at least a few hours as spectators if they cannot help; the best time to come is after 2pm to see the day wrap up and watch the bridge-building tests. Access the showgrounds through gate 5.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Deanne Dymock, Donor Relations Manager of Parkinson’s WA

Deanne was introduced by Geoff Cahif

Deanne spoke passionately about the role of Parkinson’s WA in helping the 9000 West Australian’s who have been diagnosed with this neurological condition. The impact, however, is felt by about 20,000 people when family is considered.

The average age of diagnosis is 55 to 65, though early onset can occur. It is second only to dementia as the most common progressive neurological condition in Australia. Heredity factors are minimal.

Parkinson’s WA has eight nurses providing services in WA, six in the metro area and two in the regions with the main aims being to keep people out of hospitals and aged care, maintain the quality of life, to keep health professionals up-to-speed, and to support research.

The organisation is not-for-profit and was established in 1984. There are 22 support groups and they also rely on support from the community, government and grants.

The main problems facing the organisation is that they are operating in deficit; people assume that they are government funded where only half their nurses are; and that the NDIS is not for people over 65 – where most people with the condition are.

Deanne asks us to:

understand and support their fund-raising;
encourage family and friends to participate
or fund-raise for events such as A Walk in the Park

RYLA:

Mia Davies Andy Sommerville-Brown

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a challenging seven-day programme which provides a unique opportunity for leadership skills development.

Mia Davies and Andy Sommerville-Brown recently attended the course and were financially supported by this club.

Mia spoke of the course in glowing terms, citing an increase in knowledge, confidence and gaining a sense of purpose. She became a much more independent thinker and said she had ‘found her tribe’.

Mia thanked the club for their support.

Andy also gained a great deal from attending the course and came away with more confidence and self-belief. He said that every activity had a lesson to be learned and greatly appreciated the opportunity the club had given him.

Both these young people were excellent representatives of their generation and the future of this country and world generally are in good hands.

He thanked the NGC staff Denise and Marco, Bunch catering and Sponsors Lizzie Bee Florists, Butler Settineri (Club Auditors), Paragon Consultants (Charitable Trust Auditors) and PSZ Accounting (Charitable Trust software).

He called on members to recognise RI President Barry Rasin’s Presidential theme for the year, ‘Be the Inspiration’ and to Salute the Flag.

The closed the meeting at 7.45.
