SPEAKER: (David Martin) – introduced by David Miller

  • David spoke about the Little Creatures story, 25 years of fun and friendship.
  • He started by giving an overview of the brewing business in the 1980s when regional breweries were all the rage. In 1983, the Matilda Bay Brewery was the first new brewery since World War II and the first craft brewery in Australia. By 1990 the breweries in Australia were mainly consolidated into CUB/Fosters and Lion Nathan, with only the South Australian Coopers as an independent brewery.  The Matilda Bay Brewery was bought by the Fosters Group in 1990.
  • The founders of Little Creatures were Phil Sexton, Nic Trimboli and Howard Cearns, and the funders were Adrian Fini, John Atkinson and David Martin. David was about to finish in Hong Kong when asked if he would like to join the new brewery venture. The plan started in 1997.
  • In 1998 the group bought the property that housed a crocodile farm in Fremantle, and the first two beers were brewed and launched in November 2000, being Pale Ale which has fresh hops and is thirty-six on the bitterness index, and Rogers’.
  • Little Creatures was listed on the Stock Exchange in November 2005, and $21 million was raised.
  • In the 2010s, Little Creatures was the fifth-largest brewery in Australia and had a 0.5% beer market share.
  • In 2012 Lion Nathan took over Little Creatures for $360 million.
  • Little Creatures opened the craft beer market in Australia; now, there are 500+ small breweries and 350 distilleries in Australia.
  • The company was called Little Creatures because live yeast is added to the bottled brew and looks like little creatures.
  • Thank you to David for the interesting talk.
