President opened the meeting at 6.30 pm. After informing the meeting of his NZ ancestry, John Thornton led the rousing singing of Advance Australia Fair.
The meeting was streamed on Zoom so that all could engage via that media.

Deidre House celebrating a birthday on 24th October.
Jason van Straalen will turn 50 on 22nd October but is celebrating his first wedding anniversary tonight, which most members thought was not an excuse for his absence.
INDUCTION OF NEW ROTARY CLUB OF DALKEITH MEMBERS:
The President invited Barbara Chandler & Stephanie Fryer-Smith to the podium, along with David Miller and John Lindquist.
David introduced both Barbara and Stephanie to the members, having known them both for 50 years. He noted that following their induction, lawyers will outnumber engineers within the Club.
John Lindquist who is our link to our founding Club (Nedlands), officiated with the membership induction, noting this was the first time the Club had held a dual induction.
OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:
John Bolto briefed the meeting on the Business Lunch, in particular the present restriction on the number of tickets. However, should the current restrictions move to the next level, all those wishing to attend should get tickets.
Tony Chien advised members of a Metso Christmas Concert featuring Tchaikovsky favourites, including the Nutcracker Suite. It will be on Sunday 13th December, at 5.00 PM at Penrhos College in South Perth. RCD has been allocated 100 of the 450 tickets, and Tony is seeking volunteers to assist with selling these tickets.
PRESIDENTS REPORT: (President Anthony McGrath)
- Noted that 24th October is World Polio Day. It is a time across the globe to raise awareness about Rotary’s great work over a number of decades.
- Rotary in WA is supporting the My Home project to provide sustainable & affordable housing for homeless people. 18 Rotary Clubs in WA (including 2 from District 9465) are involved. Our Club will also be involved under our Community Services Committee.
Work on the first project located in North Fremantle will start soon. St Patrick’s have been selected as the Community Housing Provider. He will keep the Club up-dated as the project progresses as it looks to be really worthwhile.

The Sergeant, with the assistance of Corporal Bruce Fiegert, extracted the following fines from members:

John Martin – leaving home for the meeting without his wallet, and having to borrow funds.

GUEST SPEAKER: ( Mr Ian Hardy - Warden, St George’s College, UWA )

Lindsay Dry introduced Mr Ian Hardy, whose address was titled “Oxbridge in the Antipodes”.
After studying at Oxford University, Ian entered the business world before moving to a Master’s role at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth. Ultimately he moved to St George’s College.
He explained the origin of St George’s. Sir John Winston Hackett bequeathed funds to the University of WA, stipulating that ‘2/8ths’ of the amount be used to fund an Anglican College. Sir John was a lawyer who attempted to enter politics, before becoming a pastoralist in the Gascoyne. Eventually, he became Editor of The West Australian. His wife, Lady Hackett, was 40 years his junior and a descendant of Grace Bussell.
The design of the original building was based on a traditional school, with a quadrangle and even a cupola to house the school bell. It was modelled on Selwyn College in Cambridge. Even the roofs were sloped to accommodate snowfall. The modern air-conditioning units are now housed within these roof spaces.
Ian read from a 1931 edition of ‘The Dragon’, the College’s newsletter. In particular, the report of the Official Opening on 23rd April 1931, which noted the collapse of Sir Robert McMillan (the Chief Justice of WA) after his speech, and his passing some hours later.
The College is modelled on a monastery, having a Chapel and a Refectory.
Georgians are in many areas of the community, giving service and upholding their values. It was noted the similarity to Rotary ‘Service Above Self’.

Ian was questioned on the current state of University education.
President Anthony thanked Ian for his interesting and entertaining talk.
